Many of you have been wondering what is going on with me and the site – and with good reason, as I haven’t send out my usual update for far too long…

The simple answer is: I have been quite busy over the past few months. Now it is time to get things back on track…

LOOKING BACK

This site was started in December of 2005 as a fun idea I had to help people get free movies. The Redbox was fairly new – and brand new to me – and I thought it would be cool to put together a website dedicated to it. So, I did… For quite awhile there were literally dozens of codes active at the same time, giving many, many free movies to myself and those of you who were with us.

The year 2006 saw this site grow from a handful of visitors to over 2000 per day. From just a few dozen subscribers to nearly 10,000. I tried to write every week with new information, and created and modified the Redbox Codes Tracking System that we have today.

As 2007 arrived, Redbox was really starting to gain market share – thanks in part to many of you on this site – and the codes started to taper off a bit. While there are still many working codes – and more to be discovered – there are now more rules and restrictions.

We also launched a new feature this year…

THE VIRTUAL TREASURE HUNT

I need to address the status and history of the treasure hunts. Many of you participated, some prizes were given out, but everything stopped abruptly after number 3. The reason that they stopped was because I lost my assistant who was putting them together and running them. Also, participation in the hunts decreased each week, so the lack of interest gave me less of a reason to ensure they continued.

Many of you expressed concern regarding the hunts, and the points, etc., and pointed out that there are plenty of other websites doing that and you didn’t want this to become one of them. It was something I thought would be fun to try, and it didn’t work out. I am sure we can find something else to keep things fun around here! :)

Also, to all those who participated in the final hunt and did not receive the information promised, I apologize. The information I was going to give you was dependent on an outside factor that changed. I want to make it up to you, and would love to hear your thoughts on what I can do for you… Please leave a comment and let me know…

MOVING FORWARD

I still believe Redbox is the best value in renting movies, but the days of getting multiple free rentals per week are slowly coming to an end. But, this site will live on, and will provide a place for you to get free movie rentals and more…

The first thing I want to do is thank all of you who have participated in sharing Redbox Codes, who have commented, and who have invited others to this site. Without you – the InsideRedbox Community – this site is nothing and would not even exist. I truly hope your experiences here have – for the most part – been positive and rewarding.

I hope you will continue to be a part of us as we move into the future…

In order to move forward I am going to need your help and your input. I want to make some changes to how this site provides information – and you could be an important part of that if you want to be. Read on…

First, I am looking for some of you who would like to write for us. You would simply need to keep up on the latest information on Redbox (and its competitors in the DVD Rental Kiosk market) and write a post about it. You would simply report the news and give some commentary on it. If you are interested in contributing in this way, please leave a comment on this post letting me know, and I will contact you via e-mail.

Second, I will be looking for someone to help me manage the Codes system. I plan to make some changes to the system that will allow you to report further information on a code that did not work for you, which will help us keep track of whether codes are for new customers only, or only for use at certain locations, etc… With these changes, I will be looking for an “editor” of sorts to make sure the codes system stays updated with the most accurate information at all times. This position could be filled by the same person who fills the first position, or someone else entirely.

As before, if you are interested in this, leave a comment on this post and I will get back to you.

If you are interested in either of these areas, please be sure the email address you enter is correct as that is how I will contact you.

If you have any further comments, please leave them below as well. And, thanks again for your support!

I guess the promise of free codes forever was too good to be true. Anyways, thanks for running the site and for access to the codes. Keep up the good work.

Sadly, for quite some time now I have not been able to get a code to work for a free movie. However, we still the dollar rentals. A free movie every now and then is a bonus. Thanks for keeping the codes updated for us.

I too have been having trouble with the codes lately. I too really enjoy the $1 rental and if late I don’t “freek-out” with those rediculous late fees – just $1 more. I live in a small town with only 3 Redbox and the two nearest to my home have not been allowing a code stating, ‘sorry, unable to process this code, sorry for the inconvience’. Finally found one new code the other night that was way down the list. So keep trying.

    Hello,

Redcodes have not worked in months for me, also as excited as I was origionally about the redbox, I realized that there are some negative factors, for instance, I was trying to return a movie a few days ago, the box was jammed, no support at all of course, so I had to drive to another box, also, while I was at a box, a customer was saying to me that the movie they had rented had been damaged, they were unable to watch it, and had to return it in that condition, knowing the next person would get the damaged dvd too…these are real issues, while renting for a buck is awesome, there are going to be some drawbacks as well. I also don’t have a redbox near me, they are all 20t miles, how do I get one in my area?????

    @michelle,

No question there are always issues, particularly with new services…

The issues you brought up (problem returning / damaged dvd) is easily solved by calling Redbox (1-866-REDBOX3).

For everyone, if you do ever get a damaged DVD, please do not just put it back in the box without calling Redbox and letting them know.

If you do get a damaged disc, Redbox will give you a code for a free rental and mark the disc damaged in the system so they can remove it.

So, when in doubt, call Redbox!

    HI there!

I’d like your writing job. I’ve just published a series of 21 “insanity sagas”; would like a change of pace.

I found you in Albertson’s grocery a few weeks ago and we meet in secret almost every night of the week . . . shh!

    Hello Michael,
Isn’t Google wonderful? I never knew you existed until today. You are on the Google add a button site, and are now added to my toolbar. LOL Anyways, I want to know along with Miss Bailey above, if there is information on how to possibly own, and or operate kiosks here where I live? I have never seen nor heard of Redbox, but with this idea, HERE, the opportunities could be absolutely immense!!! Keep on going, and let me know something if you got the scoop. Thanks Much, Miss Shawnee
P.S. Oh, I live in Michigan. Waaaay too many of us are struggling here, and the way I see it, a dollar movie, New Release, is a sure bet cheaper for family night, than a whole lot of other things I’ve spent money on.
