In the middle of last year, we brought you word about e-Play, a kiosk operator that was partnering with Walmart to offer video game rental, sales and trades at its machines. The venture didn’t work out as planned, apparently, because e-Play’s website now displays a statement saying that the company has suspended its operations.

The e-Play kiosks charged per day for video game and DVD rentals, and also allowed customers to purchase used games or trade in their old games for cash or store credit.

The major beneficiary from e-Play’s shuttering will likely be GameStop, which counts used game sales as a massive part of its business.

Insiders, did any of you make use of the e-Play/Walmart kiosks, and if so, what were your impressions? Should Redbox be at all nervous to see the demise of a fellow kiosk operator?

I never used them. Not only that, I didn’t know they existed. The few Walmarts close to home have Redbox.
And to answer if Redbox should be nervous for this demise, obviously no. Redbox has other stuff to worry about: Blockbuster future kiosk expansion, release dates conflict with the studios and competitors that use other options like streaming and mailing.

Saw these at all but one Walmart nearby, but they didn’t appear to be stocked at all.

I wish they would have another kiosk out now! Redbox has really bad customer service. Plus I would love to rent games. The new kiosk should have things like new release days “rather then the night before or day of” on the website. Also all new releases. I hate waiting for a movie to come out and redbox doesn’t have it. I also hate waiting a week to rent a movie or driving everywhere cause its out of stock. Needs to offer some kind of insurance, a phone number where they actually answer. No problems when reserving online. I can’t count the times I lost my money cause I reserved online and my movie wasn’t there “but it took my money which I never got back cause like I said customer service sucks.” Would be great to have the option to have the movie for more then one day but not cost 1 a day. Also a website for mobile phones. Not only iphones. Well I could go on but I don’t want to write a book!

I use to use the e-play machines all the time. But, they were not located in walmarts they were in Exxon “On the Run” gas stations, here in Charlotte, NC. I really liked the machines and they would get movies that Red Box didn’t have. So, it was nice being able to have more choices. They had great customer service and ran some great promotions to earn free rentals. I was very sad to see them gone. There is another machine called DVDexpress that are located in Bi-lo grocery stores I’m waiting to see if they are able to make it. I hope they do it’s good for the market to have more then just one company doing all the $1 rental boxes.

For $1 a night what can you expect? It is still a great deal, no matter how you look at it!

Here in the southern ‘burbs of Minneapolis/St Paul, the Walmarts just have RedBox. I don’t like them, have had nothing but trouble, mostly the machines not working and then the selection of movies…. We had e-play at some of the Super America’s (like 7-Elevens) and my husband and I really liked them. They had a GREAT selection and we are so sad they are gone! We went to Super America the other day to get a couple of movies and the box was gone! We were shocked, the cashier said he thought they were great too, and he had heard they went bankrupt. Too bad!

Redbox , What are you wanting for to stock Blue Ray disc’s in your machines. If you want to jump to the head of the line, you better get a move on. Don’t let the competition win new customers, if they beat you to it.

Never saw any Walmart rental boxes around here or even within 50 miles.

Walmart in Newington CT had one. Never saw a line at the machine like the redbox’s do. The machines (game & dvd) were removed within the last month.
