Is Redbox Still a Good Investment?

RedBox-LogoRedbox parent company Outerwall has many investors questioning its value these days.

As the DVD and Blu-ray disc continue on their inexorable march to extinction, many feel that Redbox will be going the way of Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, and other fallen home entertainment titans in the relatively near future.

TheStreet TV’s Jack Mohr, on the other hand, has a much more upbeat outlook on Redbox.

From Mohr:

First, [Redbox] doesn’t have expensive bricks-and-mortar locations. It simply needs a kiosk to do business. Second, the prices for Redbox’s rentals are much cheaper than on demand offerings, giving it a strong competitive edge.

Mohr concludes that Redbox’s recent price increase won’t affect business much, as a Redbox rental is often an impulse purchase. Mohr summarizes by calling now the “perfect time to snap up this compelling value investment opportunity,”

Do you agree, Insiders?

I see RedBox going the way Block Buster did. It may be a few years down the road. But everything is going online. Even NetFlix is doing away with the in the mail bit by bit! In 3 // 4 years. The in the mail will be gone.
RedBox will need to find a way to make the Movies Instant. And be like NetFlix.
And they try’ed it. And it did not work.
They need to do something. And soon…….

Extinction of discs? i highly doubt it. A great number of families don’t have the benefit of internet and cannot watch stream entertainment (ex. Netflix) other people like physical discs for collection. Streaming is not the way to go and i doubt it will be a definitively pick over other methods, one of the reasons is simple…bandwidth hog plus too have HD you need a fast internet, not available everywhere and the costs are high.

I must say what you say is right. But everyone said the Laser Disc would not go.
They are gone. And the VHS. Gone. DVD’S will go. Something new will come in..
And that is Online. Yes! All kinds of people don’t have fast net to stream. Millions on end don’t have it yet. And you are right again. All kinds of people still do not have the net at all. Me I like my Disc. And still buy them. For my collection.
Even the Big Old 12″ Laser Disc.
But in the end. Online will win. it may be some years down the road. I hope it is.
I love my disc.. And yes you are right again… My Fast Net run’s me $71 a month. And I know millions can’t pay that.. I am lucky…
      I just don’t see DVD’s being here in 8, 10 years…
But then you never know….. Right!

Redbox isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Blu-ray rentals are on the INCREASE, video game rentals are on the INCREASE. I say in 2020, we will still see Redbox machines on the corner. Maybe in 10 years they will be on their way out, yes, but not any time soon.

Redbox is still the best bang for the buck out there. If streaming media is your thing, and you have the bandwidth to handle it while the rest of your family is doing stuff, and you can’t afford to watch A dozen or more movies at five dollars each per month, well, good for you. But with my DSL service, and the demands my other family members make on my DSL service, physical media is still the best option. And at this price, I don’t see this going away anytime soon. Like I said, Redbox is the best bang for the buck.

For me it all comes down to price. If streaming movies were not SO much more expensive than Redbox, I would probably do all streaming movies. I do not even check the streaming options because the last time I did the latest releases were $6 or more. So for the same movie I can pay $1.50 at Redbox or $6+ for streaming? It is not even a question for me. If the streaming people ever get smart and start charging $3 or less per movie or Redbox jacks up their prices too much. I will probably stop using Redbox. FYI – I am perfectly happy with the new rate of $1.50 for DVD’s and $2.00 for Blueray but the next time they raise prices, I will be reevaluating again.

I have netflix and I rarely use it to watch movies. I use it more for tv shows. Lets be real. They don’t get the newest released movies. And when they finally get a good movie, I already seen it a few months ago.

I wasn’t happy with redbox raising its price to $1.50 but it is still way better than paying $5-6 to stream or going to a movie theater and paying $13 a ticket. Also, I believe redbox is running a lot more online promotions where you rent 1, you get 50-75 cents off on the 2nd rental.

I just rented online Fury and John Wick for $2.50 plus tax with the online promotion… That is still a great deal.
