Is Netflix Strangling its DVD Business?

download (1)It’s no secret that Netflix has viewed its DVD-by-mail business as an inconvenient afterthought for years.

As the company’s streaming business has gotten the lion’s share of attention, the DVD business has gone virtually unacknowledged by Netflix.

Readers on The Consumerist are reporting that their wait times for many Netflix movies are now stretching into YEARS. Movies that seem to have particularly long wait times include classic films, animated movies, television series, and new DVD releases. Consumerist readers report that when they’ve called Netflix to complain about the situation, they’ve received polite but extremely vague answers about the reasons why so many movies have such long wait times.

Is this an attempt by Netflix to drive its customers to its streaming business by making its DVD service almost unbearable to use?

I have yet to have that big of a prob with the wait time at NetFlix. A week, sometimes 12 day’s. And when it does happen. They send a extra disc saying thanks for waiting. Are they find it at some shipping place about 1,000 miles away. And say. It’s on the way. And they send me a extra disc to watch.
I have the streaming and three out in the mail.
NetFlix will not drop the in the mail DVD thing yet. Millions still have it. It will be years on end until that happens.
You really think NetFlix will tell 7, 8 million + people. Sorry. No ore disc in the mail. Not a chance! That will just open the door for some Co to do it..
NetFlix will not shoot there self in the foot again. Like they did years back.
The streaming is ok. But I still like my disc in y hand. As millions still do…

Maybe there is an opportunity for another player to buyout NetFlix’s DVD-by-mail business?

Redbox would be a good candidate.

Not going to happen.. Not yet anyway… NetFlix will not tell people, you can’t have the disc in the mail yet. Not with 7, 8 million people still getting disc in the mail. Maybe in time? But not yet!

If you can’t get it by mail, try your local library. In Pittsburgh they have a huge catalog of movies on dvd and bluray. I am sure other cities do the same

im doing a trial with netflix now. they have been perfect so far.
they have sent me … long delayed items in queue, 3 at a time, 9 per week,
and a bonus disk each week for free, all have played without a glitch.
this is my 2nd week. i have 2 more to go. at this rate i will get 40
    bluray disks for free.

i even have next weeks big releases at the top of the queue.
we will see if they send them.

    tony

ps. 10 per week for free, i can wait 2 days to get via mail.
    instant Gratification is overrated.

The number of items in my DVD queue listed as ‘very long wait’ has been gradually growing, and my assumption is that ‘very long wait’ means I’ll never get them.

While my overall service in terms of DVDs has been good, I’ve noticed a slow decrease in available titles and service. I decided to quit this week (and I’ve been on the DVD 3-at-a-time plan since 2006). I didn’t want to go through the frustration of dealing with the slow death of their DVD service. I know it will be around for several more years, but I have other options, and don’t need the frustration. I’ve got better things to do. For a long time Netflix was great. As long as I sent my discs back Saturday, I usually was one of those first in line for new titles on Monday, and I appreciated the depth of their catalog. But it’s coming to an end, and I’m not going to go down with the ship.

Moom, you’ve talked me in to quitting too. It will never be like it once was.

      Goodbye Netflix.

I will keep my NetFlix three out at a time and the streaming.
When it get’s to the point where NetFlix tell’s me. In the mail is over.
It’s all streaming only now. Then OK,…
But I think the in the mail may not be gone for a very very long time.
Keep in mind… If the Co’s start doing the Comcast number. And put caps on your net use. All kinds of people will find they are over it in know time at all.
And start going the DVD in your hand deal.
And that is where NetFlix can get people back to in the mail deal.
RedBox can make a good come back also. if they get in gear…
        Just a thought..

I have to hope that Netflix doesn’t screw with it’s DVD mail service. I tend to watch Indies, foreign films and documentaries. Those are not available to me from any other source(especially not from Redbox).Netflix has a huge collection of them. I get the BIG Blockbuster titles from Redbox. That way I make intelligent use of both companies. I’ve never ever had a problem getting the titles I want from Netflix. I return all “out” movies by Friday. That way I I get all the new releases i want mailed on Monday. I always remove “catalog” movies from my Queue so I get the new titles right away. If one doesn’t ship-then I stick a catalog movie in the queue and get it on Wed.

      Hi,
I don’t think Netflix will shoot there self in the foot again.
      Like they did years back…
I think they will have the DVD’s in the mail for a very long time yet.
As long as people keep buying DVD’S and want them. Netflix will have themfor people in the mail. Yes! I see the price going up a bit. But I am one that will keep paying, to have them in the mail.
I have three out at a time. And getting 4, sometimes 5 movies a week.
Fast turn around. And if there is a DVD I really want. I can just buy it at Target.
And yes I have the NetFlix streaming also. As the Warner Bros Streaming.
Have way more then I need….

I currently have the “2 Discs out at-a-time” DVD rentals with Netflix. I’ve always liked their Netflix DVD mail service for such a long time. But this month is by far the worst. I send back the rented DVDs and they act like they have not received them. This reminds me of what Blockbuster did when they had their DVD rentals. Which makes it fewer received DVD deliveries for me. When this month’s subscription is up, I’ll probably not renew. And start getting back to renting DVDs from Redbox with their special discount offers instead!
