UnknownLast year, HBO launched a new streaming option for cord-cutters called HBO Now.

Designed to compete with Netflix and offer HBO access to those who would not otherwise subscribe to the channel, HBO Now may not be living up to expectations.

In a recent call with investors, HBO chief Richard Plepler got a bit defensive when announcing that the service had signed up 800,000 subscribers, which was well under what analysts had hoped for.

Said Plepler:

“I wouldn’t say only 800,000 HBO Now subs . . . We’re just getting started, I think we’re going to make a lot of progress as we put new content on and get onto new platforms.

Plepler reiterated his statement about how far he thinks the service has come already when discussing plans to market it more aggressively:

“I think we’ve made a lot of progress, . . . We see an enormous opportunity ahead.”

Do you think HBO Now has failed to launch, Insiders? If so, what can the cable giant do to keep up with arch-rival Netflix?

$14.99 per month says it ALL!

At third the price HBO WOULD have gotten FIVE times the number of subscribers!

I’m sure they are well aware of that. Remember they traditionally have made so much money off cable companies that they didn’t get into this service sooner as they didn’t want to make them mad or mess up deals so they probably don’t want to price it lower than what you could get it for on cable

I did some math, so now they make about $12 million, if they cut prices to $4.99 and had 5x the subs that’s still only about $20, plus angry cable companies and probably higher churn and more use on their systems and maintainance. I can see why they stick to this pricing. Just imagine if they came up with a new really good show. I can be every show I liked: Oz, Sex and the City, The Sopranos, Takes From The Crypt, Real Sex, and other various short lived shows where they took risks. True Blood was the last show they had that was must see to me. I feel these networks think they are so classy that is enough. Not for me, it was lack of sensors and a good cast and story. If they bring that back then I’d care.

It is too expensive when I could get both Netflix AND Hulu for about the same price.

At $14.99 that say’s it all.
How about they try match Netflix price for the online deal…Then maybe more people would go for it…. And really I don’t see much on HBO that I like anymore. At one time they had some great stuff on.. Now..? And how about the go back and put on everything the had from the past. Some really great shows.. more people way come. I can get ShowTime on HULU less then this HBO deal..

With all the new released movies that streaming free online now why would one need to spend $15 more a month for HBO Now ? I watched “The Martain” Streaming in HD the week before it was released by RedBox.

They are not going to lower the price because then that would cannibalize all the cable subscribers. That’s why. I join for 1 month when the new GoT season ends, binge watch them and anything else i want to watch, and quit for another year.
