Netflix subscribers just got a new reason to covet Apple’s shiny new iPad, which becomes available this Saturday. Netflix has created an app for the slate device that allows subscribers full access to its streaming service. The Netflix app is available now in the App Store on iTunes at no cost.
One cool feature of the app is that if you start watching a movie on your computer, it allows you to pick up exactly where you left off on your iPad.

This is actually confirmed on the Apple App Store, so no joke here. Sorry to disappoint! :)
I will be getting an iPad on Saturday (or Monday if UPS doesn’t show!) and I will likely try this app out. I don’t really see myself watching movies on such a small screen, though, but perhaps if I was travelling or something – who knows.
After I get a chance to check it out, perhaps I will do a review on it.
The Netflix App is definitely live on the App Store – I downloaded it.

Does the streaming part of the Netflix app require Wifi or can you use AT&T’s 3G service?

A. Not me. For the money, I can buy something much better. For the $699, I could have a lightwieght dual-core 2.5GHz notebook with 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD Writer, et cetera et cetera. I would have liked to try out the Palm Foleo though.

A. Are you kidding me?! I would EXPECT to be able to use netflix out of the box,… Safari?

A. What are you smoking asking this question?! What ‘next level’? You can already watch streaming video on smartphones, it’s a step backword to watch the same video on a larger device.
I think it is silly that someone should need a custom, proprietary app to watch movies from netflix.
I also don’t think the iPad is the right device for watching movies on like this. The iPad only has a 1024px768p display and a 1GHz ARM processor. That’s not the same thing as a 1GHz netbook processor, it’s a smartphone CPU. While the CPU can playback HD Video for up to 10 hours before the system shuts off at 0% power,… the iPad lacks an HD display?! If the ipad was widescreen (maybe legal paper dimensions) at 1280p x 720p, that would be a good start. However, Apple says that the device would only be able to playback those movies at 30 frames per second,… and that’s tested with the video stored internally, not requiring network buffering and such that would further reduce the playback rate.
Also, this isn’t a multi-tasking device… it’s running nearly the identical software to the iPhone/iTouch.
So, IMHO, if netflix streams a specially formatted version of the DVD to the iPad ( maybe H.264 and at a reduced resolution ) then it may atleast be worth using the app.
When one of you preorder people have a chance,… test it out and let us know how it works for this task.
