[UPDATE: Now back in the App Store and better than ever!]

The day has finally arrived! Apple has approved our Inside Redbox Mobile iPhone application and it is now in the App Store.

The version that is currently available is the Lite version. The Pro version (which allows reserving movies from the app) will hopefully be available soon. [edit: Pro version now available, see link below.]

Inside Redbox Mobile (Free Version)
Inside Redbox Mobile (Pro Version)

With the Pro version you can rent a movie directly from the App (by being redirected to Redbox.com to process your payment). We have created the capability to reserve a movie from within the app as well, but Apple is not allowing that at this time. As soon as we can, we will add this functionality to the Pro version.

In addition, the Pro version will get the Movie Queue and some other surprise new features soon. If you buy now, you will get those upgrade for free. Once we add those in, we will be raising the price of the app.

Enjoy!

Any chance of an Android App next?

Yes, there is a good chance of that. I was recently contacted by someone who wants to put such an app together.

So, hopefully over the next few months we can make some headway on it.

Can someone please explain why you can’t just go to the redbox site with your regular browser on Android? (or any other phone for that matter)

I don’t see why you couldn’t bookmark the URLs for each box near you and then bring the list of movies up with “by release date”, so the new releases would be first.

The only use I would have for this is by time I get there the movie I wanted is gone, so I could look for another nearby location while still out (saving gas).

One of the useful features is the ability to find the movie you want that is in the kiosk closest to you with one click.

Any chance that it will be available for free?

Please make it work with 1st gen ipod Touch. Please!!!

The only requirement is OS 2.1. You should be able to install that on your 1st gen iPod Touch, I think…

I have the latest software on my 1st gen iPod Touch but I received a message saying it is not compatible with it.

1st gen iPod Touch here too – also can’t download because of msg saying iPhone only. Hopefully not for long…

I agree, 1st gen iPod Touch compatibility would be awesome! I have the 2.1 OS, now version 2.2.1 with the last update a month ago. It still is not compatible with my 1st gen Touch.

I will check into the 1st gen iPod Touch issues and update you here as soon as I have more info.

OK, we found the problem with it not working with the 1st gen iPod Touch and have fixed it in the App Store. It may take a little while to update, but it should be working soon.

Thanks to all who pointed out the problem.

Um – not sure what I’m doing wrong. I downloaded the app…restarted my iPhone 3G (with most recent OS) and RBL won’t load. It says “updating movies” for about 5 seconds, then the app crashes. What’s up?

Was hoping for a Redbox app since I bought my phone a few months ago. Love it so far, but probably won’t actually use it until I can reserve from it. (I did notice that it’s on the way, but was sure the demo video showed that was already there.)

Great news–the pro version of the app was just approved by apple. Should appear within iTunes within a few hours. The pro version allows you to reserve a movie from the app.

I am sorry you are having trouble. The app is indeed working fine for the majority of users, so your experience is not a common one.

Have you tried restarting the phone since you installed that app? A few people who had some initial problems said this fixed it for them.

As a side note, I use the app often myself, and it has not crashed for me since we came out of beta.

Restarted iphone still crashes while updating movies.

Is there anything special about your iPhone that could be causing problems. It is jailbroken or unlocked?

Another possible thing to try is uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. Then, the first time you open the app, don’t do anything until the “updating movies” message goes away. If it still crashes, try turning the phone off/on again and trying again.

If you are still getting crashes after that, let me know and we will see if we can dig deeper into the problem.

I’m with Tim. Downloaded the app multiple times on my phone and my wife’s phone. Restarted phones….no change – still crashing.

80% of the time, it never gets past the “updating movies”. If it does get past the movie update, it will crash when I search for a redbox by zip. If I search by “current location” – it tells me there are no redboxes….then crashes.

Doesn’t work on either phone. Neither phone is jailbroken or unlocked.

            Jon,

Are the phones you used both the iPhone 3g, or the original?

Are “Location Services” (GPS) turned on? You can check for this at “Settings –> General –> Location Services”.

Not sure what is causing the problem for your phones, but we definitely want to get to the bottom of it.

BTW, are you using the Lite or Pro version?

im using pro version, location services are on, my 3g iphone has never been jailbroken or unlocked

tried location services off, redbox app popped up asking to turn location services on then crashed, i have tried restarting the phone and reinstalling and redownloading the app, still no luck, wont get past updating movies

Yes, we definitely have plans to integrate MyQueue into the Pro version of the app. We hope to make this happen sometime in the next few months.

Just downloaded the lite version and works like a charm. Great job on the app. Does the pro version have the advertising removed?

Was the app pulled from the AppStore? I can’t find it (searched on ‘Redbox’, then ‘inside’).

I am also experiencing the app (both lite and pro) crashing upon startup when it tries to update the movies. My iphone is the 3g model, 8gb memory, not jailbroken or modified in any way. I ended up removing the app from the phone until this can be resolved.

Please advise if or when this will be fixed and if I can assist in your troubleshooting by supplying crash logs.
