Hulu Viewers See Huge Ad Uptick

download (1)After subjecting its viewers to fewer ads over the summer, Hulu has come racing back into the ad game, subjecting its average viewer to 80 ads last month.

80 ads per user per month is a record for Hulu, and represents nearly a 40 percent increase from the same period last year. Even though it reaches just six percent of the U.S. population, Hulu’s ads-per-user average far outstrips rivals such as AOL (26), YouTube (31) and BrightRoll (15).

Overall, Americans saw nearly 25 billion video ads last month, which translates into 56 percent of the population viewing an average of 141 ads in the month.

Do you feel like you’re seeing an increase in ads on the online services you use. If so, what’s your tolerance level?

Yes I did notice that I watch a show on Hulu and it pretty much takes a majority of the hour it would have taken to watch on tv. It’s pretty much about convenience factor. It’s the only app I have that’s on tv where I can watch every network show except CBS. I will take that into consideration when choosing new shows in the future, so they should take note. The ads don’t bother me, I have plenty of things to do while they air.

This is why I won’t pay for Hulu Plus- in fact one of the main reasons I don’t have cable is because I don’t see any reason to pay for something that also makes me sit through paid ads. If it’s free they can show all the commercials they want, but my tolerance limit is 10 minutes per hour, which is what it USED to be on TV decades ago but has now almost doubled! When Hulu started they usually just showed one 30-second commercial per break.

hulu definately showing way more ads. that is one of the reasons i cancelled my plus account. onone watches those ads anyway. when an ad comes on, iute the audio, talk to wife, check email etc. i keep looking at the countdow. up top. when its at 10 seconds i grab the remote and at 2 seconds i unmute. so orbitz, capital one and whoever else pays for ads, stop wasting your money. no one watches them

I’m soo over the ads! They use to be 20 seconds, now I feel
That they’re getting longer and longer. I’m paying to watch tv shows, not
    Advertisements!

I totally agree with all of the statements about the adds. Its getting to be way over the top. I will also most likely stop my hulu account shortly. It seems that I am watching more or Netflix than ever before.

I watch all my TV either on my DVR & skip adverts, stream via Netflix, or via Comcast. I pay $10/month for my cable TV and with their XFinity On Demand, I can watch almost any TV show for free the next day (even shows I don’t have in my package. I have Basic, local channels only). Most shows have short adverts (30 seconds) and are mostly network inserts (watching an NBC show, I get NBC trailers). That’s a good tradeoff as I am seeing upcoming shows for that channel and not being yelled at by a used car salesman.

      Hi
I want to drop Hulu, but I like getting most of the TV shows that I like thru Hulu. However, I totally agree about the adds. I’m ready to drop it. Would or could you share with me how you get cable for $10 a month? I have an indoor antenna and internet. I get a lot of interference at times with this antenna and it just doesn’t pay to start watching something and then miss a lot of the content.
Thank you for your time with this reply.
