Hulu Plus Drops Ads (For a Price)

download (1)They say nothing in life is free, and that includes Hulu Plus’ new ad-free option. One of the biggest knocks against Hulu compared to Netflix is that the former forces subscribers to sit through ads even though they are paying for the service. Hulu has announced a new commercial-free option, but there’s a catch.

If you want your Hulu Plus to be ad-free, it’s going to cost you $11.99 a month, which is an increase of 50 percent over Hulu Plus’ standard $7.99 monthly rate. Current Hulu subscribers can keep their existing, ad-filled subscriptions if they would like to.

Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins said the following about the new option:

“Providing more choice for consumers is fundamental to the Hulu experience; in addition to an array of choices in content and devices, our customers can now choose to watch with or without commercials,”

Does this make Hulu more attractive to you, Insiders? Is going ad-free worth the additional per month?

    Yes, definitely. To both questions.
I haven’t signed up for Hulu because of the ads. Now, I can pay a small premium and avoid them.

As long as Hulu broadcasts in HD (1080p or better) then I’ll watch it. Of course, nice 5.1 sound is important, too!

meh… pass. The ad breaks aren’t horrible – it ain’t worth paying an extra $4. I already have Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime – plenty of content. I’m not watching Hulu enough to justify the extra expense. But it’s good they’re offering it. Maybe if it was $10 I’d consider it.

Update on the new HULU set up…..NO ADS… YES!
    I’m going to keep it….
    At $3.00 bucks a week. it’s worth it…..
A few things about the No Ads……..
Not every show is on the No Ads deal… And they tell you what ones are not part of it….
On the no ads deal. There is a fast fade out and in bit.. And I have run into a few… that have a 30 sec ad at the start but nothing as you watch the show..Are a 30 ad at the very end….
This I can live with just fine…..

I set up a small pc with HDMI output specifically to get the free Hulu. So it wouldn’t be a $4 jump for me it would be $12 more than the nothing I currently pay. I just wish they’d bring back Hulu Desktop.

I use hulu as my DVR, so if I wasn’t watching here, I’d be watching over-the-air, with commercials. the commercials don’t bother me, I’ll keep the “with ad” price.
