Hulu Plus Considering Ad-free Service

download (1)Unlike Netflix, Redbox Instant, and other streaming competitors, Hulu Plus shows its viewers ads even though they are already paying a monthly fee for the service.

That may be changing in the relatively near future, though, according to acting CEO Andy Forssell.

Hulu and its paid service Hulu Plus don’t just show viewers ads–they show them a LOT of ads. According to comScore, Hulu hit its average viewer with more than 70 ads during August, which is a 41 percent increase from the same period in 2012.

Forssel acknowledges that this may be frustrating to some viewers, and that he and his company are mulling alternatives. One possible solution is to offer a service free of ads, albeit at a higher monthly fee. Said Forssel:

“I think that’s the right path long term . . . I believe over time we should introduce an ad-free service.”

That of course begs the question: would an ad-free Hulu Plus be worth paying more for? What say you, Insiders?

I signed up for a 2 month trial of Huluplus and am not impressed at all. Very slow switching between menus, and TONS of ads. Last night we watched Michael J Fox’s two latest episodes, saw a total of 9 commercials during each 30 min episode. Ridiculous!! Not to mention, they were the same ads during each commercial set. For $8 a month, I shouldn’t have to watch ANY ads, or at the very most, one ad at the beginning of the episode.

I will NOT pay a higher fee for an ad free service, and in fact, will cancel my membership if they don’t cancel their ads.

I’ve been considering ditching hulu. I just don’t use it often enough waiting around for shows I barely care for each week. The no ad thing would probably keep me. I love watching the ads but I’m in that industry, my wife hates them however.

I’ve done the Hulu Plus trial and was disgusted at the number of ads. If I’m going to pay for it, I don’t want any ads at all. And I’m not interested in paying extra for no ads. There are too many other services that have no ads that meet my needs.

    Subscribers should not see commercials!

We subscribed to Hulu Plus for a number of months and hated the ads all along so after trying Netflix and found no ads (with comparable content) we dumped Hulu. We rarely watch regular TV due to all the ads so paying for Hulu Plus (or any other streaming service with ads) was out.

I love Hulu Plus. It’s a lot cheaper than cable and cable subscribers pay a premium and get a lot of commercials so I don’t see having ads on Hulu Plus as such a big deal. The price is right as is. I won’t want my subscription price to increase for an ad-free experience.

I wouldn’t pay more for a no ad version. I really don’t mind the ads. The only hing that is bothersome is seeing the same ad 9 times in 30 minutes. I would rather have 9 different ads.

still WAY cheaper than cable + DVR – and the content is WAY different than Netflix – I use Hulu for CURRENT TV shows, Netflix for movies and series that aren’t available on Hulu (obviously, seasons that have already played for cable subscribers). I wouldn’t pay more for ad-free, and if it was my only option, would probably go back to recording over-the-air with my VCR (better quality on Hulu because we don’t get great reception all the time), but will never go back to paying cable prices……

I don’t watch Hulu very often and would not pay more for ad free. The ads are tiresome but bearable.

We have had Hulu now for about 2 years and having one commercial every 10 minutes or so was liveable, but recently we now see 2 or 3 every 10 minutes. We are considering cancelling our subscription to them for this reason. We used to watch a lot of shows on Hulu mostly because we didn’t have to sit through a ton of commercials, but frankly the increase in commercial interruption has increased and while it may pull in more revenue for Hulu, it has lessened our watching time.
