Hulu Drops Prices for New Members

download (1)If you were considering becoming a Hulu subscriber, now might be a good time to jump on that. Without much fanfare, Hulu has dropped the monthly price for new subscribers by 25 percent.

For a limited time, new Hulu subs to its ad-supported service can lock in at a $5.99 monthly rate for one year before their price goes back up to $7.99.

The move may be an attempt to drum up interest in Hulu for when it will allegedly launch an online TV service early next year. But the idea of Hulu becoming a multi-channel video programming distributor (MVPD) is not seen as a sure success by some industry insiders.

Brandon Ross, analyst with BTIG Research, said the following:

“The ramifications of success could have an effect that goes far beyond just Hulu’s partners, from MVPDs to cable networks to Netflix. A failed Hulu virtual MVPD could dispel the idea of widespread competition for incumbent bundles from virtual bundled competitors . . . We are skeptical that the Hulu bundle will meaningfully impact the MVPD landscape from a subscriber standpoint. We simply wonder whether the price/value will be strong enough to attract customers.”

Would a Hulu-owned online TV service interest you, Insiders? What about this new $2 per month discount on its streaming service?

If they want me to pay for their service, they’re going to have to quit showing ads first.

Why do existing subscribers who have been loyal to a company get screwed? It happens with cell phone services cable and Fios and other companies.
