Netflix apparently keeps comin’ a courtin’, but fickle HBO doesn’t seem to be interested. That’s the interpretation one can make from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings’ continued overtures to HBO and the just as continuous rebuffs he seems to be receiving from the cable giant.
Hastings has made no secret of the fact that he (and his customers) crave HBO’s high quality original content on Netflix’s streaming service. As recently as Netflix’s Q2 earnings call yesterday, Hastings said the following:
“My point is that we’re just another network, and that when you have multiple networks, they often find ways of working together . . . So it’s a general point that it’s not a zero-sum game between HBO and Netflix. And that, in fact, there may be ways of working together. But there’s nothing particularly pressing.”
Hastings’ musings about a possible partnership were quickly quashed by a terse statement from an HBO spokesperson:
“We are not in discussions and have no plans to work with Netflix,”
As great as it would be for Netflix to obtain HBO’s outstanding original content for its streaming service, Hastings and his customers may have to resign themselves to the fact that HBO views Netflix as a competitor and will likely never budge.

No Big EE… HBO can can it. I can care less. I have not watch HBO in years. And caned the Cable TV last year. Doing just fine with out it.
This is why people continue to pirate HBO content, they refuse to change. You would think they would look at what happened to the music industry when they refused to change.
It’s not that hard – make good content, give it a decent price and make it easily available to different devices.
HBO doesn’t have outstanding content. Last time they did was with Oz. Their shows like True Blood are good because I like vampires, the cast, and can have language and nudity but most stuff in boring and the network is over-priced. I’ve been waiting for some reality and dating shows like on MTV and networks but uncensored, that I would watch
Game of Thrones?? Curb your enthusiasm?
Unless HBO GO is a big flop, they’re not working with Netflix.
I hardly ever watch anything on HBO. I don’t think they have much of anything to interest me even if I do pay for it..Only once in a blue moon will they get me to watch. Yea Netflix. When HBO comes crawling, make they beg!!!!
As long that hbo go doesn’t become an seperate month by month subscription that doesn’t require to have hbo with your cable company i dont see they and netflix are direct competitors and would love to see some hbo content on netflix especially game of thrones and true blood
