Here’s an idea that might keep executives at Netflix and Amazon up at night.

HBO Go, the acclaimed premium network’s streaming service, may soon be unshackled from its sister pay-TV channel and go head-to-head with streamers such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video.
HBO CEO Richard Plepler, in a recent interview with Reuters, hinted at internal discussions about making HBO Go, which offers current and past episodes of many of HBO’s popular series, available without a subscription to HBO. As a stand-alone property available for a monthly fee, HBO Go would offer a compelling option to Netflix and Amazon subscribers who covet HBO’s premium content but don’t want to pay for the channel’s monthly subscription fee. HBO is already doing just that in Scandinavia.
According to Plepler, however, uncoupling HBO Go from its parent channel in the U.S. may still take some time. Said Plepler:
“Maybe HBO Go, with our broadband partners, could evolve . . . right now we have the right model. We would have to make the math work.

If HBO Go were to become available on its own for, say, $10 or $15 per month, would you take the plunge?
[via Home Media Magazine]
No, not that much on HBO that I care to watch. and I dont have to have a movie playing where ever I go
I can care less. Nothing on HBO that I watch..
As with any streaming service, it would depend on the amount of content available and if my devices support it. I’m not all that interested in current HBO programming, but there are a few older movies I would like to see again that are not currently available on DVD.
ditto
I already pay for it HBO on my cable subscription, as long as it stays free to stream for cable subscribers, it’s o.k. with me if they offer it to non subscribers for a fee, but less content than netflix should cost less than netflix!
Not the least bit interested in any HBO content.

HBO is so highly overrated. Their movies hardly ever change, I have it now on a promotion but will not subscribe to pay for it. I would not use their streaming unless it offered as much as Netflix at the same or lower price.
I couldn’t care less about HBO content. I look to HULU and REDBOX to watch good movies and tv reruns. Where does HBO get off thinking that $10-$15 a month is not a significant amount to today’s average family? Same question right up the line to the copyright owners, how much is enough?
I guess I’ll be the lone voice to say yes I would. I wouldn’t subscribe every month like I do Netflix, but for a month here or there to watch the current season of Game of Thrones, or to finally watch the Sopranos? Yes
I’ve been an HBO subscriber for more than 30 years. Unfortunately, my cable provider, Service Electric Cablevision, does not support HBO Go and that sucks. That being said, I refuse to pay another fee for HBO just to play it on my portable devices, when I’m already paying for it via cable. HBO NEEDS to make their streaming service available to ALL of their subscribers, not just the ones with the bigger cable providers.
I LOVE HBO GO! I can’t wait to be able to have that without paying for 600 channels I don’t want. HBO Go has all the HBO content, both movies and series, and is generally more reliable than my cable subscription.
I went to my in-laws house to watch “The Newsroom” and “Game of Thrones” on HBO GO. I browsed the menu and decided, then and there, that I would happily pay $8/month (and buy a Roku) if I could get access to their content. I’m about to cancel my Netflix subscription. They have a wonderful selection of cartoons, but I’m not six years old. Amazon Prime looks attractive, as well.
This sounds like a good idea and I’d probably give it a shot.
When I first heard about HBOGO, I thought it was ridiculous that it wasn’t a stand-alone service, that I needed to subscribe to that channel via my cable provider.
No- I had HBO go with my subscription to HBO from cable co and it didn’t cost more than that to have both, why pay that much just for HBO go. Anyway found I didn’t watch HBO and cancelled it. If they offered just HBOgo as a standalone maybe $5
If the price is around 10 dollars I’ll join in and still keep netflix cause although hbo go not only has the movies that are on its channel right now but also has everything a in its library but its doesn’t have other tv shows from other networks like netflix but it also depends if the devices they are gonna support still waiting the ps3 app hbo go?
Will showtime and cinemax would do the same thing that will be the end for cable tv
NO not at $10 for HBOGO . Maybe if it was less than $ 8 I would try it .
I probably would
I can get it for 15 on cable I wouldn’t pay more than 5 for HBO go
Yep! My friend has it and it has every single HBO show ever made and I love it. I would gladly pay for it.
I would pay for it because Game Of Thrones is one of my favorites and there’s other shows I would watch like Boardwalk Empire and a lot of comedy specials that only show on HBO. Netflix is not that great for me and I’m looking for a better service. I suggest HBO make the price competitive though and somewhere in between the Amazon and Netflix monthly price.
I’ve watched most of the sopranos episodes because we had HBO years ago but it’s one of those shows that doesn’t get old to me. As much as i like some of the old shows on netflix, I’m running out of the ones I like to watch.
I pay 8 bucks a month for netflix right now and my g/f has Amazon prime on her Kindle, they aren’t that much different. It’d be refreshing to me to have a service that is DIFFERENT and UNIQUE. Netflix is getting outdated.
