HBO Go is one of the most popular streaming video-on-demand services out there, with thousands of hours of high quality content available. There’s always been one big catch, however: only HBO cable subscribers can access it. Take heart, non-HBO subscribers.

There are continued rumblings from the top at HBO that the situation may be changing sometime soon.
HBO CEO Richard Pleper was asked at a recent media event what factors would cause his company to offer HBO Go directly to consumers, as does Netflix, Amazon, etc.

Said Pleper:
“If the market changes, we are not going to be caught without the ability to pivot,”
That’s cagey CEO talk for, “Of course we’re thinking about it. And maybe sooner than later.” Pleper went on to clarify his position with the following:
“HBO Go is a better and better product . . . If the model changes and it makes sense down the road [to go direct to consumer], we will have the ability to do what we need to do. But right now, this [bundled subscription] is the model that makes sense for us.”
Were HBO Go to become unbundled from a paid HBO subscription, would you be interested in signing up, Insiders?

Finally! the right business model is being adopted.
Viewers, albeit with broadband, will be able to watch piece-meal programming.
Who knows, if advertiser sponsored, it could be subscription free!
Possibly, depending on what content they make available.
So would comcast allow this on the Roku? Or would it be blocked like it is now?
I would look at it to see how good it was and what would be available.
Yes, if the cost is reasonable.
I would LOVE to be able to stream HBOGO on my roku! And I would be willing to pay for it.
All comes down to money. On cable, it is $15 a month. Wouldn’t make sense unless it was half that on HBOGO. I don’t watch movies, just the series. I get my movies from Redbox.
This is the right business model, but I have never liked anything that HBO has on. Netflix and Redbox are my solutions.
Yes, depending on price.
And the hbo go app is coming to ps3 and ps4 soon.
Hell yeah as long is a fair price but I think cable internet companies like twc might raise their prices cause they loose costumers or put a data limit
I cannot tell you how frustrating it is that DirecTv does not allow HBOGo to stream thru Roku. Sure I can run an HDMI from my computer to the TV and stream it that way but it’s a pain. The reason I got a Roku was to keep all the streaming in one place. I absolutely would not pay an additional fee to stream HBOGo. That said, if Directv decided to allow it, they would have a customer for life.
Same with Comcast.
