Scoot over, Netflix. Your chief rival just muscled its way a little deeper into your turf. Confirming rumors that had been going around for a while, HBO brought its popular HBO Go service to Microsoft’s Xbox Live today.

HBO Go is available to HBO subscribers at no additional cost, and features more than 1,400 movies along with many of HBO’s most popular shows, including “Game of Thrones,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “True Blood,” “The Sopranos,” “Sex and the City” and “Deadwood.”
Otto Berkes, SVP of consumer technology with HBO, said the following about the new addition to Xbox Live:

Netflix has long been a staple on Xbox Live, and cant’ be thrilled about this new development. Xbox owners, will you be watching HBO Go content in addition to (or in replacement of) Netflix content?

Hardly anything to worry about as I see it. It will take a few nibbles out of the tremendous growth NetFlix has seen in past year, but not impact their profits that much. I use to subscribe to HBO, but like many, we are all looking for less expensive alternatives, so I do believe it will keep prices down as competition increases, so ultimately, we will all see lower prices, not rising prices in rental industry.

Sad part about this is, as an XBOX 360 owner, I’m not going to watch either on it.
To watch Netflix (and now HBO) on Xbox, you have to pay Microsoft for Xbox Live, and THEN pay for Netflix.
I currently watch Netflix on my Blu-ray player for just the cost of Netflix.
I love Xbox, but it always baffled me that the Xbox 360 is the ONLY choice to watch streaming content from different sources, that actually charges a second fee to do so.
So yeah, if this is going to be HBO’s only venue to show thier streaming line, it could be a problem for them.
You can watch Netflix on Blu-ray players, Internet TVs, Roku (which you have to buy, but no monthly fee), and Tivo players, for no additional cost.
Netflix really isn’t part of the bigger story here. Lots of apps allow streaming on the Xbox now. The bigger story is the fact that some people who DO pay for HBO can’t access the Xbox HBOGO app if they have Comcast or Time Warner. Both of these companies, ( both being big proponents of TV anywhere) have blocked access to their paying customers if they want to use the Xbox. Thankfully I have service from an awesome provider like DISH. As an employee I know they have committed to giving their customers options to watch what they want, when they want and where they want. Not only do they support third party apps like HBOGO, they have their own DISH Remote Access app which allows customers to watch live TV and DVR recordings anywhere they want.
I don’t think this is going to hurt netflix one bit. People are cancelling services like hbo to go with netflix because of the cost. I can’t see people dropping netflix to pay for a premium movie service even if they can get the streaming for ‘free’.
what Jack said….the reason I watch Netflix and Hulu is so I don’t have to pay an extra $60 or $70 a month for cable – or more if I were to add HBO. I pay for internet, which I have to have for work anyway, and then $16 a month for more TV than I have time to keep up with. yeah, I have to wait for the end of the season to watch Psych and Eureka, the only 2 non-network shows I watch, but that gives me something to watch in the summertime. most of the original content of the cable networks doesn’t interest me anyway and if it does, I can wait for it to come to Netflix, or to DVD at my library….
