Google Play to Sell Movies?

Google has already done a major makeover of its Android Market service, having rebranded it as Google Play. The search and media giant’s next move may be to introduce movie sales to its current rental-only service.

According to “multiple sources” consulted by CNET, Google Play may offer movie downloads for sale as soon as this summer.

According to CNET, the shift for Google Play to become a major movie retailer would be a slow process, at least in light of current technology limitations:

“If Google decides to sell films, it would only be an incremental move for both the studios and Google Play . . . The sources I spoke with said that Android’s tremendous user adoption could make the company a powerful film retailer — someday .

. . One of the hurdles Google faces is that the market for watching movies on mobile devices isn’t large to begin with and Google doesn’t offer an easy way to transfer films purchased on handhelds to television sets.”

Android users, would you be interested in buying movies to watch on your handeld devices? What can Google do to make the experience compelling enough to get people to buy?

Totally useless to watch a movie on a smart phone or ipad as I see it, or as I can’t see it. lol

    Never understood this.
I’m not saying people who find this attractive are stupid, but it is just not for me.
I have an excellent home theater set up at home:
7.1 surround, 55″ TV screen, a Blu-Ray player……….and I’m going to watch a movie on my phone? uhh No.

I can see the ability to watch wherever being a draw, but I’d rather just wait till I get home to watch the movie than watch it on the subway or the beach……thanks

    Agreed,

I have tried to watch a few videos on my smart phone, and no way, it is the worst idea ever, streaming may be the future, but not unless it is made to easily be put on the big screen. And what about 3-D movies, try watching them on your smart phone, not very smart.

Buy movies to watch on a phone? Are they kidding? It’s one thing to put a copy of a movie you already have on a mobile device for your kids to watch while you’re on a road trip, but to watch a movie first time on a 5″ screen is absurd.

Well, I use to have a tiny tv set with a 2 inch screen that I carried with me when I would travel to places where a tv set might not be available. I have to be honest and admit that after watching a movie on it for 15 minutes I was not even aware that it was tiny. It was just like watching at home on the big screen. Unfortunately my father-in-law borrowed it one time and was destroyed.

Not a fan. I tried to watch movies on my daughter’s PSP on a long trip and it just didn’t work.

The Android Market is also on Google TV, I could see movies purchased to be more on that end and tablets as well and across all Android enabled devices… this would great as long as they have decent titles and don’t over price them.

My phone has a 1/4 HD full 16:9 display and I sit in bed at times and watch with my headphones on. The picture is very crisp and detailed, but buy? NEVER!!!
