Back in February, Netflix filed an agreement to pay $9 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that it had violated its customers’ privacy by keeping records of its subscribers’ viewing habits years after they cancelled their service. A federal judge has finally granted preliminary approval of the settlement.

The U.S. District Court judge said the settlement “compares favorably” with those of other consumer privacy cases involving such companies and Google and Facebook. The settlement also calls for Netflix to “decouple” its subscribers’ rental histories from other identifying data one year after Netflix service is canceled.

The hearing to consider final approval of the settlement terms will be held on December 5. Where do you stand on consumer privacy when it comes to providers of entertainment–should companies be allowed to retain your data under any circumstances after you’ve left the service?

When you leave, they should dump it. But none of them do. They sell it off.

I can’t wait to get my share of the settlement!

Maybe it could be used for ONE, perhaps TWO, rebox rentals! ;)

I want to know where I sign up to get my share, since I know Netflix won’t send me my money directly…

      Hi,
You had to fill out a form over a year ago. And send it back in.
They asked if you wanted a WalMart gift card are a check.
It will still be next year IF, and I mean IF people get anything?
      Don’t count on much!
      Be well.

they should have to dump it. it is no use to them anyways. netflix should have to mail the money directly to us without us haveing to fill out a form. they have our addresses so they know who should be getting the refunds.

Its funny everyone involved in this who actually paid netflix gets sh*t but the lawyers and courts get thousands and then they say the rest goes to non profit company’s. Ha bunch of garbage if you ask me. We the people who paid should be getting the big cut not the court and lawyers.

I also read that they gave our info to wal mart or something like that and all of our info was either sold or gave away and not just names number and emails we are talking personal info credit cards emails and any other vital info we gave to them. I just got this email i never knew any of this was going on and i was with netflix for over a year and a half. Now I know where all this spam comes from on my personal email which is hardly used.
