Does Pirated Video Concern You?

UnknownHere’s a topic we haven’t covered too much on this blog: video piracy. With the ever-increasing proliferation of illegally obtained and shared content across the web, digital platform security firm Irdeto conducted a survey that had some fascinating results.

According to Irdeto, nearly half of consumers around the world will watch less or no pirated content after learning of the damage it inflicts upon the media industry. Irdeto claims that its study is the largest of its kind, polling more than 25,000 people in 30 countries.

From Irdeto’s news release:

“This willingness by nearly half of consumers to change their viewing habits speaks to the huge impact that education could have on reducing the number of people who pirate video content,”

Irdeto CEO Doug Lowther expanded on this notion:

“A battle is being waged in the media & entertainment industry . . . Legal content offerings are no longer only competing against each other. Pirates have undoubtedly grown into a formidable foe that should not be ignored. With more than half of consumers openly admitting to watching pirated content, it is crucial that the industry tackle piracy head-on. To do so will require technology and services to protect the legal content as well as a comprehensive education program to help change the behavior of consumers.”

While we’re not going to ask you if you watch pirated content, we are interested in hearing your thoughts on the level of damage it may inflict on the media world, and what should be done about it.

The cost of FIOS and Cable is out of control. I believe that people will ignore any issues against piracy. People will not mind watching a pirated video or tv show. It is also getting easier to find pirated content on the web.

There is sites hosted overseas that has ever show available to stream any show right away. I was told this by someone else. I said it’s illegal and they said it was OK because they weren’t downloading. I said it is the same thing. People also seem to get copies of theatre recorded movies at truck stops. I was at a friends house who had a truck driver friend visiting and he popped one of those movies in and it looked and sounded horrible. The problem in general is most people just don’t care. They certainly don’t treat me well or care about the well being and feelings of others so getting them to care about the media industry will never happen. I live in the Midwest though where we already get paid less than other states and people view Hollywood bas very rich and that if they watch something free it hurts no one because they weren’t gonna pay anyways. I even stopped using Spotify because artists don’t make enough money unless you are already a huge artist yet I still hear about people buying certain phones that have apps where you can download any song. Makes me realize people always think they deserve the world for doing nothing and many will always take advantage of stealing if it’s easy. I myself have bought thousands of TV shows and movies via Laser Disc, VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, and now sold them all and have a nice digital collection. I buy all my music off the Google Play store. I got rid of cable but still pay for basic and use Netflix and have season passes for shows I really like such as The Walking Dead. It’s very easy to see shows you want. Most of cable really isn’t worth it but not one time have I heard someone who pirates mentioned Cable pricing as a reason. Here are some more reasons. They have a small child who talks all the time so they watch at night to catch up. They have cable btw. I suggested getting a DVR. Another person said they can’t afford to take their family to the movies and don’t want to wait for rental so they download. Everyone basically wants what they want when they want it and won’t pay much for it. I have a conscience and I like supporting things I like in hopes there is more of it. The biggest thing is pricing. If more newer releases were 99 cents to 1.99 then they would rent more. If more shows were available to anyone with ads anytime they would stream more. If you take a episode down after a few weeks and someone can’t binge watch to catch up because they were busy the last few months they will just go elsewhere. Sure there might be some people who will change their ways once they hear who’s affected but when we continue to see splashy award shows and hear about who’s getting 35 million to do a picture you aren’t gonna gain any empathy. Plus again people just don’t care. Also putting a blank screen saying 15,000 people worked on the film at the end of the credits at a theater where we did pay is not gonna get to pirates. It will be removed on the download. You have to get blocks on these steaming sites and apps. As internet gets faster and sites make it easier to get all for free now with no ads the average person don’t care about quality of image or sound or any moral dilemma, just what’s happening to their favorite characters or seeing the latest flick if someone they like.

If you buy movies in dvd or other format and added them to your digital library and then sold them is that not piracy? Or is your digital library purchased separately? There is a saying that locks keep honest people honest. With that in mind and the increased ease of finding everything from music to movies for free online I only see the piracy problem getting worse. What do you think? By the way you wouldn’t be related to a Michael Cronin in Florida?

Selling your DVDs that you purchased is not piracy. Once you buy the disc, you are free to do with it as you please, rent it, sell it, destroy it, copy it. You just can’t sell copies of the disc or put it online for others to view/download.

The other comment is correct. I owned the discs at the time and had the right to participate in their program. If anything the issue was some of my older movies didn’t come with a digital copy that most newer movies i owned did come with a copy, so I used the program for that. Plus a lot of Blu-rays were $17.99 plus and I was giving them another 1 or 2 bucks, so they were often making $20 off me and a lot of those movies I have watched maybe once since then, then when I sold the Blu-rays most were sold for under $10. I also got burned with expensive movies i had bought on Amazon only to find out they won’t play nice with Ultraviolet, so I left so many too expensively priced movies and dozens of seasons and ended up re-buying them on VUDU so in some cases I dropped quite a bit of money. I would be so bold as to say the industry loves people like me who goes to the theater a lot and then buys a lot of movies. They really gotta love that I am all digital now because they control the content and I cannot sell any media anymore. To answer your second question, no idea if I am related to that guy, probably not, not aware of any relatives there. Upper Iowa is where most are

With inflated costs of cable, the lack of an a la carte pricing system and the inflated costs for creating media today, the piracy will continue to grow. With the widespread death of torrent sites, more and more streaming sites are popping up. I really don’t care one way or the other about pirated media. As long as something is heavily controlled or restricted, there will be a black market or, in this case a grey market.

Me. I told the Cable Co to go take a walk. On the TV part. Don’t need the trash that is on anyway. YES! I do have the cable for the net. And its a rip off.
Charter took over. And they were saying how my bill would drop & all that bit. Ha! My net bill went up 25 bucks. and its still just the same as when I was with Time Warner. I can see why people watch the pirated media. The price & greed and all. I have Netflix, HULU, Warner Archives, and over the air TV.. I really don’t need to watch pirated media… but again I see why people do….
It’s all greed & more greed.

This is literally the only place I hear of anyone subscribing to Warner Archives. I feel like you all must be 60+ because I feel that would be for older movie crowds. No one in my life even knows of it.
