Disney and Redbox have always had a fairly amiable relationship, and do not have a formalized contract between them as Redbox does with many other studios. It looks like Disney may be imposing its first new release delay window on the kiosk operator, however, with the sci-fi film John Carter.

Disney’s big-budget box office failure is not slated to hit Redbox until a week after its street date today and will not arrive at Redbox-owned Blockbuster Express kiosks until July 3.

This makes it appear that Disney has chosen to withhold the new title from kiosk rental for the first few weeks of its availability on disc.

John Kraft, an analyst with D.A. Davidson, observed the following about the apparent delay:

“Unlike other studio relationships, there has not been an official contract between Disney and Redbox . . . We don’t believe that has changed. Regardless, we believe John Carter represents the first ‘official’ windowed title.”

When asked for comment, Redbox affirmed its title-by-title, contract-free relationship with Disney and stated that it will be implementing a workaround for the new film. From Redbox’s statement:

“We will be sourcing ‘John Carter’ through alternative means,”

Is this the beginning of unofficial windowing from Disney on all of its new titles to Redbox, or is the Mouse House simply trying to recoup some of its money on this particular film? Leave your thoughts in the comments, Insiders.

Wow! John Carter was a failure at the box office! All the advertisements that they started last year and the all the hoopla, I was sure it would be a good turn out at least for the first couple of weeks. Its not a movie I was going to rush out and see anyways so its no big deal to me. Even when it comes out I am not going to be rushing out to get it or putting it on reserve. I really don’t have a big desire to see it. I plan on seeing it when the feeling is right. Its just not in the near future.

Guess this explains why it wasn’t in the kiosks yesterday. I could swear I saw it advertised on Redbox’s website and on their boards at the kiosks as coming 6/5. Must have been a very last minute deal.

I know the movie’s not supposed to be great and that’s why I didn’t pluck down the dough to see it in a theater. After all isn’t that what most of us do? See the movies we really want to see in the theater and rent the borderline ones? But had stopped by to rent it because I know my kids still want to see it.

          Buzz.

Dan here. I love movies. But the Theaters suck now.
I mean really. You get Pop Corn that is crap. Water Cokes.
Out of Control Kids and people at times.
And even with the cheap time to get in. If I take her with me.
It is still $12.00 for us to get in.
Why pay that? I have everything I need at home. And a good home Theater set up. Good Pop Corn. Good Cokes..
Home is where it is at..
          Be well Buzz.

Yup, Not surprised. Disney’s new guy in charge of the studios, Alan Horn, … Used to work for WB. WB’s the ones who started the “waiting windows.”

So between the new CEO Bob Iger, and this Horn guy, the best Disney can do is raise the prices at the theme parks and implement delay windows. Good business strategy, guys.

Even Scrooge McDuck understood how to NOT to treat his customers, maybe they should get some advice from him.

They might actually make money instead of trying to squeeze it out of us.

If I were Disney, I’d try to get this flop out as soon as possible to Redbox and Blockbuster or anywhere else in hopes of recouping some of the losses…providing anyone wants to rent it. Besides Redbox already is using its “alternative” source for having John Carter available. Few are going to buy the DVD, no matter how long the delay.

Most of the people yammering about John Carter are the typical sheep that “read” somewhere that the movie was no good. Was it “all that”, no, but it was hardly the worst movie of the year. It is a big budget action, fantasy, adventure that delivers solid entertainment.

It was poorly marketed and turned into one of those love to hate on movies.
