imagesThe streaming video market has never been so competitive, and things will get even fiercer next year. According to a new report from Strategy Analytics, that could spell disaster for Netflix, which could lose up to a third of its domestic subscribers in 2015.

With HBO and Showtime launching standalone streaming services next year, among others, Netflix is threatened like never before, and it could bleed more than 11 million subscribers to its competitors.

Michael Goodman, Strategy Analytics director of digital media strategies, said the following about Netflix’s prospects:

“As a result of the proliferation of broadband and connected devices, consumers have more choices than ever in how, when and where they connect with music, games and video . . . As consumer adoption of these online alternatives grows, the degree of disruption felt by traditional distribution models is accelerating . . . Contrary to Reed Hasting’s opinion, everyone does not want to subscribe to Netflix . . . That is not to say that Netflix will not grow, just that it will grow slower.

This is why international growth is so important.”

Is Netflix poised to lose millions of subscribers next year? Might you be one of them?

Its all about content and exclusivity!

    Can streamers be unique?

Will Netflix make say… “House of Cards” available on disk via redbox?

If there is no reason to deal with an intermediary, than the ‘middle man’ will lose, if not disappear!

This is just the start of total online TV. NetFlix is leading the way….
And everyone is going to need to get up to speed…

This is an idiotic assumption, like comparing apples and oranges. I would never drop Netflix and have just HBO and/or Showtime. They complement each other, I don’t see them as competitors, they have totally different content. For me, Netflix will always be my Prime go to option. I also have Amazon Prime & don’t know how I could manage another channel & I am home 24/7 with a permanent disability.

I don’t see myself dropping Netflix although Amazon prime is great but almost everything that’s on amazon is on Netflix but not everything that’s on Netflix is on amazon and for the hbo or Showtime standalone services those will be an add for me on not a replacement and will probably will not have them all year round only when something I want to see is on

I have NetFlix. The online and three out in the mail. Also. Warner Bros online. And a new place from the UK online…
Going to keep them all. I dumped the Cable TV…
And don’t miss a thing. Not even the over the top bill.

Have never had cable or NetFlix, and don’t plan to this year, either.

I agree with those who say HBO and Showtime complement Netflix, and won’t replace it. Regarding Amazon Prime; still way behind Netflix’s content.

Streaming still cost us too much. On my Direct TV, I can stream movies on Encore and Starz and other channels. They’re older movies. If I want new content my first stop is Redbox. That’s the way it has been, and that’s the way it will be. I’m sure I’m not the only one in this position. What say you?

I honestly don’t get the appeal of Netflix…yeah I get you can sit on your fat you know what and push buttons to watch “content” they call it. The movies are older than crap, the TV shows are even worse (way behind)! If you still get discs…Netflix has the same delay period that Redbox does and even worse by the time you go through the “short wait” “long wait” “very long wait” BS to actually get the discs. There are countless great movies that do not exist on Netflix. Get up, get out…rent the movie on Redbox, or at your local video store…shop local. Netflix lost me as a customer when they spit their accounts to streaming and discs and started charging double. Netflix will never get another dollar of mine. Two more streaming choices to spread content even thinner is a “no win” for anyone especially the customers.

redbox lost me as a customer when they raised the price to $1.50…at first they were worth it for the new run movies but not at that price now…

I don’t see any problems for Netflix Streaming. Maybe subscriptions will slow but not dive. People use it as a baby-sitter or people use it who will watch anything. I have little use for streaming. I go to instantWatcher.c o m to look at at everything Netflix has on streaming. There is usually nothing I want to watch,Maybe once or twice a year I’ll sign up for their streaming service-near the end of my pay cycle to catch up on something I missed. I usually wait till I have 4-5 days left before the next cycle. The sign up cost is pro-rated so it costs 3 bucks or less. I watch the few things I missed and then cancel. For me DVDs in the mail is all I’m interested in. I want only new releases-mainly in foreign, docs and indies categories. I use Redbox for the BIG titles every week.
