Just had an article in the Pgh. Post Gazette about a new internet site called Clicker.com that is like Hulu where you can watch movies, tv episodes, etc. for free. It's been in testing for several months and now is available to the public for free. I checked it out and it's pretty interesting as it has available 400,000 tv episodes, 50,000 music videos , and roughly 30,000 movies. Went to watch an R-rated movie and the thing they do require is your birth date and verification that that is in fact your true birthdate.

i always thought if you didnt return a redbox dvd they charged you 1.00 + tax a night for 25 nights then it was yours but now they are saying not only do they charge the 1.00 + tax for 25 nights that on the 25th night they charge an additional 24.00 + tax for a total of $52.43 after tax or $50.75 before tax. is this true or is it just the 25 nights worth of charges?

I'm an avid blackberry user (heck you could be an avid iPhone user) but what got me ticked here is that they've got new applications out there for the blackberry that will allow me to "stream" a movie for $4.99. Redbox is $1.00 and I can return it anywhere there is a Redbox. I can grab one in Salt Lake City, watch a movie on the flight over on my laptop and return it in a Redbox in Oakland. The obviousness is that we're paying for "convenience" on this new Blackberry application so we're not having to drive that extra mile to drop it off at a Redbox... but when you factor in gas & time are you really saving that extra $3.99? Also, how long of a wait are we having to look forward to in either downloading or streaming a movie?

Then it hit me... why not put Redbox movies in Airports for travelers who might want to watch a movie on their laptop while flying. Opens up a whole new market! I just was wondering if Redbox has looked into it & how feasible it really is... perhaps I haven't looked hard enough and maybe Redbox is making an appearance in airports... but I haven't seen one as of yet.

Thoughts? Comments?

Hi all. I'm a fan of the box! I think it was a forward thinking cool idea. I am also a night owl, so renting at 1:00 A.M. is important to me. I am currently using a JVC RS-10 video projector, which is projected on to a 7 foot diagonal screen, viewed at 13 feet. This magnifies every imperfection on a DVD. While the picture still looks excellent because of up conversion, it doesn't quite have the BLAM factor of BD. BD, on this rig looks STUNNING, so when I rent, I hit Blockbuster first, and try to find whatever title that I want on BD first.

Here is my idea to get them to put Blu-ray in to their machines: From a business viewpoint, if they rent out all of the titles on a Tues. anyway, why bother with BD which will have less potential customers? Help me out here people! So my idea to get them to do it would be a financial incentive. I would be willing to pay 1/2 dollar or maybe even a dollar more for BD. Hopefully the daily late charges would remain the same. That would still be a great price. What do you all think? How can we get them to include some BD? I live in a suburb of Chicago, where most of the kiosks are at Jewel Foods. I have never yet seen a BD disk in our area.

Any ideas to tell the powers that be at Red Box?

I thought it was interesting to see a "sunscreen" installed on a kiosk a couple weeks ago. The kiosk faced north, but and the sunscreen seemed to help keep the light rain off the touchscreen. Yesterday I found another site (facing east)that also has a screen. Not all locations here (Oklahoma City) have them, so I suppose they are being installed in phases. Photo:

I called Redbox today and got answers to my questions re: codes not working. (I swear this is what they told me):

The monthly First Monday code will be sent out only to people who have joined Redbox with a valid credit card on account at Redbox.com.

Each member will be sent a unique one-use code. To get the code, you must be signed up to receive it as a text message on your cell phone. They will not email it. When you sign up to receive the monthly code it can take up to 2 weeks to be on the receiving list, so sign up now to get the December code.

They know about this site and others where codes have been shared with the public, and are doing this so members only can use their code texted to them, not post it or share it with a friend or use it on another credit card. – one use only.

When we swiped multiple cards they still picked up that it’s the same name on them, so caught on to that trick too. I did it myself, since I have a lot of cards because they all give different rebates every month on gas, groceries, retail, home, office, travel, restaurants, etc. My credit rating is very high because I pay all of them in full each month.

For those who were able to use a code several times today, it’s because it was not one of the new one-use codes that started today.

Unfortunately, this willl make most or all of the codes posted here on Inside Redbox invalid. I don’t know if the codes a person gets for joining Redbox will also be one-use, but I bet so. That would mean this site would shut down? Or just no codes but still the nice reviews of the movies and other news. Sorry. WE All Loved the Codes.

Another comment re: some rude members here: Obviously I’m not poor by the above comment re: paying all my bills in full. But not rich, either. I’m a disabled Vet on a fixed income and am just careful not to pay interest, so will take a freebie when I can get one. Why not? No one here should criticize that. I didn’t get a free movie today, but so what? I'm not whining. I have two Netflix and two from the library to watch, so no big loss.

OK, Here’s a plan: How about some teamwork? That’s how you win, isn’t it? Someone go on Redbox.com and sign up for an account with your mail address. Receive the free code for joining by email, then use it yourself, then post it here and we’ll test it for multiple use. Then we’ll know if those are also one-time. Sharing will pay off and we'll find out where we stand.

Just passing this along. There appears to be a statute of limitations on those old bulk-use codes that are typically limited to one-time use per credit card. The ones I've had new success with are DVDONME and BREAKROOM (email sign up.) It's been more than a year since I used them the first time.

Just thought I'd pass this along since folks seem to be having issues with the new one-time-use-only codes.

Now that rental costs have doubled to $2 per night plus tax in my area (Southcentral Pennsylvania). I expect my rental activity will drop about 90 percent. I wonder if they did the same thing in areas like Daytona Beach Florida where they go head to head with Blockbuster Express? I think Redbox just shot itself in the foot. I also don't like the fact that as of 10-29-2009 their website banner still advertises $1 per night.

The webmaster of redbox or the person in charge of their web site is a moron. Go do a search for a title like I did, next type your zip code. What you see next is a list of locations in my area and a small line of text that says "View more titles". Being a guy of fairly average IQ, I assumed that the movie I wanted was available in the locations presented. Right? Wrong!

My wife and I spend the next hour driving from redbox to redbox only to find that no machine had the movie. That's because the dumbass who signed off on their web site didn't think it would be a good idea to add a hmmmm.... NOT AVAILABLE button!!!!! Christ, how about the words not available next to "view more titles"? How about not listing locations unless the movie is available at that location!!! If you do choose a movie and it IS available we see a RENT button. Wow!!! Freaking genius thinking. But no Not Available anything is simply moronic.

Thanks for wasting our time RedBox!

Does anyone know of any locations in Northern California that a McDonald's has a Redbox kiosk? I rent frequently and saw the "SMR8DVD" free code and haven't been able to find a kiosk in my area at a McDonald's location. Let me know ASAP before the code dies. Thanks!

I'm glad to be a proud supporter of Redbox and it's convenience to us movie citizens. I hope these studios finally get there financials straight and keep Redbox as a partner.

My thought is YES! At the end of the summer, I'd like to see Redbox come out with a quarterly statement showwing if their sales increased OR DECREASED! I think they made a major blunder when they dropped the weekly code. Not only was it a public relations slap-in-the face to their loyal patrons, BUT my bet is that the use of those weekly promo codes generated big bucks for Redbox. Probably at least 30% of those using the code didn't return the dvd(s) within a day, therefore being charged the $1 for each additional day. This is revenue "earned" that they likely would not have earned at all by the users of the weekly promo code.

The Redbox website still says:

SIGN UP FOR TEXTS
Get a promo code sent to your phone on the first Monday of every month.

Either they plan to continue sending a code the first Monday of each month, or they are deceptively enticing people to sign up at their website and provide their phone information.

If it's the latter, they deserve nothing but scorn. But my guess is they continue free movie Mondays in some form. Maybe not completely free, perhaps rent one get one free or something similar.

I believe their 'extended through the summer' press release in May was worded the way it was so they could get more publicity by issuing another press release in August, at which time they could further fine tune the promotions. We will see.

Comments?

Can I only select ONE DVD to rent online? After I have selected one and go back to searching movies and select another, it replaces the first one on the check-out screen. It seems like I can't choose more than one without going through the whole process of filling out my credit card info., etc.

Can this possibly be the way it works....that you can't rent more than one online?

I originally posted this under "Redbox Expected to Hit $1 Billion in Sales in 2010" but the issue bothered me a bit too much that I decided to post it here.

++++++

I do like redbox rentals but occasionally they p*** me off. Why? They like to repackage old movies and showcase them along with new releases. To trick the customer further, they even put up different artwork on the case.

Next time when you try to rent, make sure you check online that they are the latest release: just google the title. This repackage-with-different-face thing had caught me like 3-4 times already for movies that I already watched. And they don’t show the year a particular movie is released either.

Lamers! I happen to get tricked just now. I wish somebody take this issue straight up to Mitch Lowe’s a** and shove it up. Maybe follow up with a lawsuit or two to redbox.

On July 21st approx. 1:00 am, I reserved two movies via RedBox web site. While attempting to reserve these movies their computer took a brainfart! My debit card was charged for six movies instead of two! Approx. 8:00 am I called RedBox via the listed phone line, was on hold for over 20 min. when I finally was allowed to talk to a live person, I was told first that I must have run my card thru the card reader six times and I had actually rented six movies! At this time I explained to the person that I had done nothing of the sort, that the only movies that I had swipped the card for were the two that I had actually rented! After another twenty minutes and several hold periods they told me that they had experienced a "hardware" problem. Ok, no problem, that was realistic, just give me my money back and it would be solved, was told they could not give me my money back for 7-10 days! At this point I asked to speak to a manager, was told none were avaliable! I had the person pull up my records and look at the transactions for the 7th of July, when the same thing had happened only that time it was for four additional charges! They refunded that money, but then charged me an additional $1.09 which after several calls they agreed to refund! After this latest problem, I pulled up all my receipts (I keep all of them) and my debit card statements for the last six months and to my dismay I discovered that there were 34 instances of over charges that red box had been paid on! No more red box for me!! I would suggest that everyone start auditing their charges from redbox!
