What would happen if two of the least respected companies in America teamed up to offer DVDs by mail?

Get ready to find out, because Blockbuster and Comcast have joined forces to create DVDs By Mail. Currently in beta, the service is nearly identical to Blockbuster’s existing by-mail program, but with a twist: Comcast subscribers receive a discount.

A statement from Comcast on the agreement reads as follows:

One of Comcast’s goals is to provide our customers with a full spectrum of movie and TV choices and this agreement is another way for our customers to access the movies and TV shows on yet another platform. This agreement complements the thousands of movies and TV choices we already offer via On Demand and online, through XfinityTV online, premium channels like HBO, Cinemax, Starz and Showtime, Comcast’s online store, and traditional pay-per-view.

Is it possible the Blockbuster name could live on through this new deal, along with NCR’s Blockbuster Express kiosks, when the parent company goes kaput?

What are the advantages for Comcast (and BB) to announce this partnership when the latter has one foot in the grave?

So funny….netflix has said many times over the year’s that there’s a reason why they didn’t name their company ‘DVDs by mail’. Apparently comcast and blockbuster didn’t get that memo.

So as Redbox keeps moving forward, Blockbuster moves backwards

Oh boy. Blockbuster and COMCAST? I really hate both companies, so just reading this article makes me smell a big piece of crap. I feel like if advertised right (mainly through Comcast commercials with their cable company) this MIGHT do well. Still, I think that Netflix will still be the main choice for online rentals. I wonder what will happen with BB Online.

I buy a game if it’s good, nothing else. But in some cases, I buy games to support a developer (take Sin & Punishment 2 for example, I bought that simply because I love Treasure) because I like to “show support” to the industry and developers, and also buy a great game.

Funny how Netflix and Redbox can’t deliver the new release until 28 days after release but Blockbuster has them available on the release date. What gives? Seems as though Blockbuster is getting an unfair advantage over it’s competitors.

The reason why BB gets the movies on the day of release is they charge more for the rentals, therefore they are paying a higher fee to the movie companies to get them on release date. RedBox and Netflix pay a lower fee to keep the prices lower for their customers. I can stand to wait a month to pay a lower fee. Some can’t, they have to have it that moment, they can’t wait. To each his own.

That’s only true for store rental. They now have the business model of Netfix $9 flat fee for mail rental and Redbox $1 at the kiosks. Because of the deal with Hollywood for cheap DVDs to rent they pay movie companies a portion of the rental fee. If this is still true then Blockbuster needs to break from that model and go with it’s competitors. Otherwise they are at the advantage.
Even though I have not rented a movies from Blockbuster since the seven day return, no late fee, never find a current release movie in the store again policy. I will most likely not buy into any current or future rental plan Blockbuster can create. Advantage for not they just need to close up shop, move on and leave DVD renting to the pros.
