Sometime in the near future, Redbox will launch Redbox Instant by Verizon, a joint streaming service with the telecommunications giant. Paul Davis, CEO of Redbox parent Coinstar, recently sat down with Fast Company and shared some fascinating insights into the strategy for the upcoming service. Here are some highlights:

Redbox Instant will not take a Netflix-like approach to acquiring content

“I saw what Netflix was doing and thought, ‘They could hit some speed bumps because they’re paying big, big dollars for content and hoping the subscribers will come . . .  Just to be real candid, we couldn’t afford to do [what Netflix has done] on our own, so we would’ve had to have a curated approach, with a much smaller offering . . . But then we wondered, ‘Are there advantages to partnering with someone who is already in the space?'”

Redbox Instant’s content library will likely emphasize quality over quantity

“I think there’s a point where as consumers, I mean, do you really need 100,000 titles? I mean, really?” Davis says. “We want to keep it very simple, with movies that matter. I think trying to win the war on, you know, here’s another 10,000 titles–we have to focus on what’s going to be really important for us.”

Redbox’s strategy for its streaming service will be similar to its approach when it launched its DVD business

“Had Redbox started by trying to replicate what Blockbuster was doing with all this variety, it would’ve very quickly become too complex . . . But Redbox said, ‘Let’s narrow the offering, and let’s make it super simple.'”

I will pass on this right now! NetFlix gives me all I need for $8.00 bucks a month. Red Box will be doing it by the Movie.. Why pay a buck are so to see a movie online. When I can pay $8.00 a month and get all I need.
I will sit tight with NetFlix..
I am doing just fine with them, why change it?

Very much a wait and see with this one as a Verizon Fios subscriber. I would hope this is somehow included with the price I pay now.

I will stay with Netflix! They have everything I want—Documentaries-Movies I missed seeing years ago-even new movies. I am NOT, repeat NOT interested in quality, I am interested in variety period. The quality of Netflix is already superb !!
