imagesNetflix is used to having just a few chief rivals, such as Hulu and Amazon Prime.

Now, however, the likes of HBO, Sony, Apple, and Dish are all trying to grab a piece of the action. Is Netflix ready to take them all on?

Kannan Venkateshwar, a media analyst at Barclays, observed the following about the new lay of the land in the SVOD industry:

“In a world where HBO and CBS and all of these guys are trying to go to the Internet, it looks like all of the guys on the Internet are trying to come to the television . . The worlds are actually converging in both directions.”

Anne Marie Squeo, a Netflix spokeswoman, was quick to downplay the competitive threat by implying that Netflix can peacefully coexist with its rivals:

“A lot of people will subscribe to more than one service similar to the way they do with apps on their phones or magazine subscriptions . . . So there’s room for multiple Internet content providers to thrive if they’re delivering great shows and movies for a reasonable price.”

What do you think, Insiders? Does Netflix have the policies and pocketbook to stay a step ahead of its hydra-like host of competitors?

NetFlix still gives you the most for your online buck….
BUT that can all change real soon. All the online competitors may take a hit also.. Right now 95% of the public does not have a cap on there Net use.
Use all you want. One price..
When the Net use Caps come into place. As Comcast wants to put in place when they get Time Warner.. All the online streaming deals will take a hit. Millions on end will be over the caps limit in no time.250-300 GB’s will go fast for a family of 4,5.. And find that the $75-100 a month net bill will be more like $175-200 a month. And Zip they will stop using the streaming. The streaming is what is going to eat your caps up.. Even a single person can use that up in a few weeks if they don’t watch it..
Just a thought.. This cap bit could be much better if they would put it more like.. 300 GB’s $30.00 a month. 600 GB’s $60.00 a month. 900 GB’s $90.00 a month.. It will never happen.. but it is a thought…

Danofive0. Let it go. We all know the caps are coming. You don’t have to answer every post with the same copy and pasted comment.

The Gov just passed the Internet Neutrality bill that should put a damper on those practices. Otherwise The Comcast/Time Warner deal would give them access to over 85% of the internet. The new law may be a deal breaker

I don’t buy the neutrality bit one bit. Why? How come the Public could not see the bill the FCC was voting on.. Why could the public not read it?
I will tell you why. It’s full of loop holes and this and that. And if this & that.. And all kinds of B.S this & that talk.. And then more loop holes.
        It’s a smoke screen.
Old Wheel & Deal is for the Cable Co’s And he will push the Comcast Time Warner deal to go through. the FCC is one more Government joke. Trying to play the, we are for the public bit game. Ha!…..
        Now I hope I am wrong… I really do… But I bet not…..
I bet by the end of the year… Comcast has Time Warner…
I am on Time Warner now. Doing great.
And going at 300 MBps.. No probs…..
When Comcast gets them. I bet my net speed drops to under 50 MBps. My bill goes up a good 35%.. And the Caps will kick in…
Why I say this.. I have a friend that is on Comcast. Her net bill is 15.00 a month more then mine. She is going at 50 MBps.. And at night & weekends it drops big time… like to 15-20 MBps..
Time will tell. But I think all the FCC did was pass one big smoke screen..
And the public is buying it… I hope I’m WRONG!

They couldn’t read it as it was being voted on, no, but you can read it now and judge for yourself. I can’t speak on it because I haven’t read it all, but they didn’t keep it hidden.

it’s good to see it is online mow…..( And the FCC got to read it before they had the Vote). The public had every right to see and read this before any Vote..
But it should of been online about a month before they had a Vote. So people could give feed back on it….
Just by going through it fast. I found a hand full of loop holes in it.
And not for the public.. read it good.. And look for the If’s and But’s and must have and they can.. But. bit… Must must have. And more loop holes..
But it is good so see you can read it now..

Comcast already had caps once upon a time, and many providers have had them as well. My current provider has a 300GB cap that I would almost always use up, but decided to pay $10 more a month to get 110mbps (up from 55) and a 1000GB cap.

I can’t deny that caps are awful, but the majority of internet users don’t actually use that much. Streaming takes a good chunk of mine, but I also download around 100-150GB of other stuff every month. A reasonable cap isn’t going to hurt most people. Ideally, Comcast will offer tiered capping to satisfy everyone, and they did when they had caps.

Honestly, their data caps are one of the most minor issues to worry about when it comes to Comcast. It’s all the other crap that needs to be fought against.

NetFlix will become like HBO. Its all about CONTENT. Content creators will directly stream over the IP stack.

Any other form factor is doomed as a middleman with one foot in the grave.

Netflix used to be the main distributor for tv/movie streaming. If more studios have there own streaming distribution none of them will make money. How many providers will one family sign-up and pay for? I have three. That is enough for me.

      I have two…. NetFlix and Warner Archive…
      More then I need..

Enough for most is when it’s no longer as reasonably priced as cable. Three services totals about $30 a month, which is cheaper than many cable plans not on some crazy promotion. That should be enough to satisfy plenty of folk, and I’m sure studios and networks know that striking deals with the biggest players is beneficial to all parties.

Disney saw that, which is why they made a deal with Netflix.

The biggest thing that will keep services like Netflix alive are these deals. Content providers will all do more to get their content out on their own services for subscribers day-of, or day-after TV airing, like many networks currently do, and then utilize a service like Netflix to get continued views at least after first run, or after a season is wrapped up.

Most Netflix subscribers aren’t on it to watch what everyone with cable watched last night. They’re there to binge entire seasons as quickly as possible, and it can happen after a season has concluded. It’s a weakness and a strength for Netflix, as it will make the service appealing to content providers who have already received first-run views already, which are the most important. Extra few million $ to put it up on Netflix for people to watch before the next season, maybe entice them to keep up with new episodes now that they’re into it… works out for all.

    Jimbo and jamie,

Danofive0’s message is important enough to repeat to let newcomers become aware of the cap possibility.

      Daniel,
Thanks. I have run onto all kinds of people that have NO IDEA about what the Caps are. What they will do. They have NO IDEA at all. Zip Zero.
And I tell them about what could happen. And I get. NO WAY! They can’t do that! HELLO! THINK AGAIN. Yes they can. And are about to. Comcast is just waiting to get Time Warner. Then they will give everyone a round house. And down you will go for the count. And millions will go! DUH? How did this happen? What I only get 250-300 GB’s? I have a family of 5. My Net Bill is $200 Bucks.. I am over my Caps? What are they? How did my Net Bill get so high? Like I said. Millions have No Idea about the Caps yet.
Yes Comcast will get Time Warner. But they are going to end up in Court trying to get things the way they want. It will drag out, and drag on a time.
Comcast is the worst co in the USA. But the FCC & fool Government does not care about that. And Comcast will have 50% of the Market.. When they get Time Warner Cable.. Talking about Monopoly. This will be a good one..
And when they start the Cap’s. Everyone will do the same. And then next thing you know. Streaming will be for only the well off. Yes it can happen..
      Just a thought…

The new Internet Neutrality law went into effect recently.Hopefully the law will put the nails in the coffin of the Comcast/TW deal. I would be surprised if the FTC approved the deal. The 2 companies together would have too much access to the internet customers. Check out the law on the internet.Caps are now illegal. You will like it

As people will find out in time. The Net Neutrality Law is a smoke screen. It will just make thing worse in the long run. And will not do anything to stop the Comcast Time Warner deal. Old Wheel & deal is all for the Cable Co’s. And Just a time back. The Idiot FCC was all ready to oK it. But something happend. What? You got me…
Now they are saying it will be 160 day’s are some new B.S.
By the end of the year good Old Comcast will have them. And have a good 50% + on the cable/net. And it will just get worse as it goes.
Comcast is the worst of the worst. And you really think the FCC gives a shit? Ha! Dream on.. Comcast is so far up Old Wheel & deal a$$ he can’t even sit right..

If caps are illegal, why did I get charged last month for going over 250gb?

First off, Danofive0, please look into Xanax or Valium or something stronger. Please stop posting the same thing over and over and over again. We know your opinion, we know what you subscribe to, and we know what audio/video equipment you have.

As far as Netflix is concerned, I consider them the SEAL Team 6 of the streaming providers. Sure, there are the Rangers, the Green Berets, the Mossad, and the Spetsnaz, but when it all comes down to it, The Naval Special Warfare Development Group is the best of the best.

And Netflix’s original programming is pretty darned good, too.
