There were more than a few Blu-ray players sitting under Christmas trees last month, according to a new report by The NPD Group. The research firm says that, spurred by prices down 34% compared to the previous year, BD player sales surged 44% during the five-week period between Black Friday and Boxing Day. The average selling price of the high-definition players dropped to 1.

Overall, consumer technology spending was down approximately 1% compared to 2008.

Stephen Baker, VP of industry analysis at NPD, said the following about the 2009 technology shopping season:

“The dynamics of the holiday season changed this year; the holiday season started before Black Friday as retailers ran Black Friday-like sales throughout November. . . That move may have lessened the Black Friday hype for consumers, but the increase during the final week of the season is a sign that consumers either went back out or waited it out to get the best deal.”

Hollywood is keeping a very close watch on Blu-ray sales, and hopes the format will gain even more traction as high-definition 3D technology is introduced this year. I personally have four or five close friends or family members who took advantage of the deals this holiday to go Blu. Insiders, did you or anyone you know answer the siren song of high-def picture and sound?

Will the format help keep Hollywood’s dreams of the return of a sell-through dominated model alive? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Anyone who buys a Blu-ray player is wasting their money. Same features as regular DVD. It’s not like they are geting anything new.

Hmm. I don’t even own a Blu-Ray player or HD set, but I can say one thing for sure, you’re so far from the truth you can only be one thing: Trolling! Y’know, sometimes I wish it were possible to report posts.

      PSA: Don’t feed the trolls.

If you don’t own an HDTV or if you don’t use the right connections, Blu-Ray won’t look much better than DVD. If I look at the HDTVs with Blu-Ray discs playing on them at Walmart, I’m extremely underwhelmed. I’m surprised so many people are buying Blu-Ray when the stores can’t even show them off well enough to make me believe it’s a Blu-Ray movie without having to look at the player.

Apparently anyone who disagrees with you is a troll. That would make you a loser. Y’know, sometimes I wish it were possible to report LOSERS.

Why is Curtis’ comment being hidden? Let me say it again: “Anyone who buys a Blu-ray player is wasting their money. Same features as regular DVD. It’s not like they are geting anything new.”

      THIS WEBSITE BLOWS.

I am not Trolling. I honestly think it is a waste of money. DVD is good enough for me. Maybe when they start adding more features to Blu-ray I will get one. but I don’t see much reason to spend all my money on it when I am satisfied with what I already have.

I upgraded from a 27″ TV to a 40″ LCD TV on Black Friday at about $450. I didn’t think a 32″ TV at about $250 was worth it as the difference between 27″ and 32″ is not that great. Going beyond about 42″ screen size for me is not justified due to cost. I, also, gave away my VHS player and cassette tape deck. I’m left now with two regular DVD players. The picture is great either for TV (I use rabbit ears – I’m really cheap) or DVD. I won’t go Blu-Ray until the price drops to less than $50 which incidentally I don’t think is far off. I hooked my latest laptop up via HDMI (It has an HDMI connection and it works great with the TV). In fact, I played a movie off my hard drive on my server in the other room with the laptop accessing it via my Wi-Fi connection with my $10 Belkin router. I guess I’m now ready for the future.

My family and friends all have either 720p or 1080p LCD TV’s 32″ to 46″ and use an HDMI cord between their tv and Blu-ray players and we all easily can tell the difference in picture clarity. Even those people I know in person who can’t afford to upgrade to HD yet agree that it is a waste to keep buying DVD when they can buy discs with higher resolution available and many of them have taken advantage of deals to get players for $78 or less and just hook up their Blu-ray players to their old tv’s until they can afford a nicer tv.

I’m happy with DVD. I’ll stick with DVD until the end, just like I did with VHS before it.

I was dubious of BluRay when I saw it on a PS3 a couple years ago. But we just upgraded my 55″ Sharp LCD to BluRay, with a Samsung BDP3600 and a new Sony ES 5400 receiver connected via HDMI. I had bought my son the Cars BluRay (DVD+BluRay combo). We liked the DVD on my Sony LCD, but once we hooked up the BluRay to the other TV, we all noticed the difference. It is great. Going BluRay on new releases, not willing to upgrade my library yet.

My new BD player still hasn’t played a BD on it. I bought a ton of TV series on DVD that I’m still trying to get through and have no plans on paying twice as much for a single BD.

Anyone who has a Blu Ray player hooked up with the proper equipment will tell you the truth – Blu Ray looks incredible. You need a 1080p television, and you need HDMI. But even better if you have 1080p / 24. My standard discs look great playing in my Blu Ray player, but the Blu Ray discs are just incredible. Since the costs are coming down, expect a time in the future where every player produced will be Blu Ray since they play both standard and Blue. Kind of how all televisions being produced now are digital.
