It looks like Blockbuster is deciding to come to the DVD rental party again with some 99 cent rentals of their own, according to a speech given by Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes at Reuters Media Summit on Thursday.

Now, we don’t know which movies they will be offering for the magical sub-$1 price, but according to the Reuters article, Keyes did note that it would encompass “thousands of DVDs, including many classic older movies.”
What about new releases, Jim? Probably not going to happen unless they want to face the wrath of studios like Universal, as well.
We can never count Blockbuster out of the game, and it seems like with their set-top box, possible kiosks, and now this, they aren’t going to go down without a fight. January will be here quite soon, so we will see what they have up their sleeve shortly.
I haven’t been there in a couple of years myself, and I don’t think this will bring me back, because I currently have about 7 Redbox kiosks between me and the nearest Blockbuster.

Sure, I’d rent some 99 cent DVD’s from Blockbuster depending on the DVD’s they offer. Some of the older movies I missed, some are classics that I could watch over and over, so, it just depends on what they offer.
I actually would go there more, especially if they were for 5 or 7 days since I could rent a bunch at once to keep for the week and save gas since that’s the main reason I don’t go much now seeing as I only would use them with the 2 out at a time plan cause $4.35 for 1 movie is crazy to me. I would use them for older titles or ones Redbox doesn’t have only.
Yeah, I’ll come in for some older flicks that I haven’t seen in a while that Redbox doesn’t carry. That’s really Blockbuster’s only advantage: inventory.

Brilliant, except for the fact that they use DVDs as a core business, not as a loss leader. I see them losing at least 3 times what they are losing now.

I have no use for blockbuster. I get every one of my movie rentals from Redbox. I usually don’t rent older movies so i am good.
I am currently using Redbox and also a FREE ONE MONTH Trial of Blockbuster Total Access. As of right now, I am not a big fan of Total Access even though I’m getting it for free. It takes forever to get movies and forever for them to check in your returned movies.
Blockbuster Total Access works and I’ll still go there. I love the Redbox idea, but our Stop&Shop Redbox must’ve been mostly empty when I tried it for the first time last week — requested about 6 movies before it finally gave me one. I’ll try again today & later this week. Blockbuster has many copies of anything new, then sells them off for $10, then$5, when they get older. I get mailers really quickly, just have to make sure they scan them in when you bring them in, so the warehouse can immediately release the next in your queue.
I haven’t been to blockbuster since I found Redbox at Wal-mart. I would however go back if they offered .99 movies because of the better selection blockbuster offers. I hope Redbox causes all the movie stores to re-think their prices!
I don’t think it is only BB rethinking things. I used to use Hollywood for movies, and hadn’t been in since Oct, they called me the other day and told me I had a free rental waiting for me. But I was never even a frequent renter, I thought it was too expensive, I expect they must also be losing money.
I haven’t used BB since I found Redbox, either. Total Access was OK when they gave you unlimited store trades for the mailers. Then they changed it and raised their prices. It’s too expensive now.
That’s about the time I kicked em to the curb!
I’d rent the 99 cent rentals from Blockbuster when they are movies that I can’t find at Rexdbox or movies that Redbox doesn’t stock.
I havent been to BB in months ,i find it very convinient to do grocery shopping
and pick up a movie or two from Redbox. lately i’ve been reserving online so it speeds up the process even more. only if the movie i want in not avaliable from Redbox would i go to BB.
I’d like to know if these boxes will be located at the bb stores or at mc donalds? I really need somewhere close by. My walmart is about 15 mins. from me. BB is closer. Why are’nt there any redboxes at mc e d’s?
I stopped renting at BB years ago. They simply charge way too much their movies. I was using a local video store which had deals on release days, but it was impossible to get the latest titles unless you were there at store opening. I muddled along like this for awhile, until a friend of mine told me about Redbox… and I haven’t looked back since. Even if I am lazy or sick and can’t get back to the store for a day or two, it’s cheaper than Blockbuster. I just hope Redbox is making enough money to stay in business…
I also tried Netflix for awhile. I was excited about video downloads in principle, until I saw that the selection of available DL movies was greatly reduced from the general selection. They weren’t up-front about that, either, which I feel is dishonest and biased me against staying with Netflix. (I briefly tried BB online, but it was inferior to Netflix.)
Snail-mail Netflix users, don’t kid yourselves, either: they are very deliberately controlling the speed at which your movies are shipped to you. Why? Because they lose money on shipping if you go through the discs too fast. If you are the standard Netflixer, who sits on that copy of Lost: Season 3 Disc 4 for 4 months, they are making a fortune off your laziness. When you wise up and increase your throughput, all of a sudden the stream slows to a trickle, even if you are on the 8-at-a-time plan. It’s simple math.
I will never step foot into a blockbuster again. they turned me into collections for a movie that i returned.
I would give Blockbuster’s deal a try — if they would let me sign up! My husband and I are attending college out of our home state. When we tried to get a membership at the Blockbuster just blocks away from our apartment, they said we HAD to have a Michigan ID card to sign up, no way around it apparently. We probably would have spent thousands of dollars there over our five years in Michigan for school, but I guess they just didn’t want our money!
My blockbuster has had a selection for 10 specific movies for $.99 each month for about a year. As far as I can tell they are the new releases about 3 – 4 months old that didn’t do very well. Usually nothing I was interested in and they always come out at the library before going to the reduced price at blockbuster.
no i quit using blockbuster afer they changed the unlimited policy and red the ceo commits that if the changes make any customers mad they can rent elsewhere.

My Blockbuster here in Omaha has had 1.00 rentels for about 3 weeks. Not current releases but a good selection of some of the olderr ones. 1 week rentals.

As we say what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Redbox will always be at the fore front only they give and have reliable codes on Mondays to receive a free rental on Mondays. I doubt, Blockbuster will have a weekly give away. Movietime” saying I’m not a hater. Just opinonatived.
Well, I’d definitely still prefer Redbox for new releases.
With that said, a vast majority of the movies I rent are either too old or too obscure for Redbox – but when that’s the case, I just go to my local library, which has an utterly fantastic collection of thousands of DVDs (from the most recent to the extremely obscure.)
So yeah, my trips to Blockbuster are few and very far between – and I don’t think this is going to change that.

Since I discovered Netflix in March of 2005, I’ve never set foot Blockbuster. I tried their DVD by mail service, and frankly compared to Netflix it sucks @ss. With the BB total access plan in my area-say I have the entire season of Highlander Season 1, followed by season 2, then season 3 and so forth on my queue. Logic would dictate that I would want to watch season 1, disk 1, followed by season 1 disk 2, then season 1 disk 3-and so forth *before* season 3 disk 5. Nope. They sent me in order: season 3 disk 5, season 1 disk 2, season 4 disk 3.
They would list every movie in my queue as “available now” including spots 1-5 on my queue and send me everything BUT the top spots and then claim to “loose” my movies in the mail. Doesn’t matter if I returned it via mail or hand delivered to a BB clerk. I went to Netflix and haven’t looked back. Granted they have their problems and they aren’t perfect but I wouldn’t be such a loyal customer if I didn’t like their service.
The reason I use Redbox is because sometimes the more popular movies at Netflix that I have on my list have a short or long wait so if I’m really, really wanting to see it I go to Redbox. I figure I rent about 3-5 movies a month from Redbox.
I don’t care how low BB drops their prices, I refuse to back there. They are overpriced, their staff is rude and their late fees are not worth it. Like many other people, they sent me to collections because I didn‘t return 2 movies when I know for a fact I did. Besides do they need to charge 7 bucks for 3 bags of microwave popcorn on top of charging 4 bucks for a one night new release rental?
