Blockbuster to Live On in the U.K.

175_90_blockbusterBlockbuster may be dead on this side of the pond, but our friends in the U.K. will see the brand revived before the end of this year. Dish Network, which purchased Blockbuster several years ago and has lost nearly $100 million on the venture so far, has licensed the Blockbuster brand to Crash Entertainment Group in the United Kingdom.

CEG will relaunch Blockbuster retail and by-mail businesses in the U.

K. before the end of 2014. They will begin with about ten new BB-branded stores and will also rebrand 5 existing CEG stores.

Dish CEO Joseph Clayton said the following about the Blockbuster brand’s new lease on life in the British Isles:

Despite our closing of the physical distribution elements of the business, we continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings.”

What do you think Clayton’s comments about leveraging the BB brand digitally could mean? Have we not heard the last of Blockbuster in the U.S.?

Dish is trying everything possible to make a profit out of this disaster. It’s done.

Good for Blockbuster, and good for the British Isles! I hated to see Blockbuster leave. I had a lot of fond memories standing in line there waiting for new movies. I don’t know what the future of Blockbuster is here in the United States, but Joe Clayton is one wily guy. He knows the business.

Biggest mistake in eliminating Blockbuster in the US. It was a great bargain,
netter than redbox or netflix. Do something smart and bring it back!!!
