In the video store equivalent of hoisting a smiley face flag on the Titanic as it slips under the waves, Blockbuster is posting banners in its stores crowing about its rental exclusivity on WB titles. Signage proclaiming the availability of The Blind Side and Sherlock Holmes have been spotted in Blockbuster stores across the country.

As you may remember from a few weeks back, Warner and Blockbuster signed a new distribution deal that made BB the only multi-channel provider to stock all major Warner releases the day they are available. As evidenced by the recent signage, ailing Blockbuster has wasted no time broadcasting the lack of Warner titles from its archrivals, Redbox and Netflix, for the first 28 days of their release.

Will such hubris-drenched signage attract renters who would otherwise pass Blockbuster by, Insiders?

Have you rented a WB movie from BB lately that you didn’t want to wait to arrive at Redbox or Netflix?

good for them, Netflix and redbox took its market share this is the least blockbuster can do for the next few weeks before it goes down.

A friend and I watched Sherlock Holmes this weekend using Comcast on Demand. The show is good and I look forward to a sequil. Will likely wait for Redbox in most cases otherwise.

    Hahahaha
I just started working with blockbuster and they got all excited when they got this deal. Inhonestly started laughing out loud.
I stated that us having 28 days on the other competition is hilarious! U still have pirates playstation renting comcast on demand. Rentals are not the only way people watch movies. An by having an short exclusive for 28 from one studio isn’t gonna get the company back on the path.
Managers started a rebuttle and I just laughed again and stated that blockbusters current move is the equivilent to this. Assume each company in the competition was like a ant hill. Blokbuster is basically throwing water on it and maybe killing a couple ants but In a day that hill will be back up and running and most likely improved.
    Blockbuster. Get better.
I turned a customer away a day ago too. Hahahaha
she actually cancelled her membership. Recommended she use redbox bc returning was to complicated at blockbuster somehow. Hahahaha
ohvmy. Corporate is retarded. They think game presales. Direct mailing and also sellig popcorn and snack will save them.
    Also.
Blockbuster will start selling Tvs very soon.
    Yeah. That’s real smart.

I also saw a dish network ad for Blindside on ppv that said something to the effect of it won’t be in your mailbox and you can’t get it at the vending machine in and showed pictures that resembled netflix and redbox with a red diagonal line through them.

It kinda irritated me but then again you can’t blame them for trying to use whatever advantage they can get.

In the long run, there isn’t a movie that I need to see badly enough to spend $5 or whatever on it rather than waiting 28 days to see it for a dollar. It will be the same movie, right??

Blockbuster Online is $16.99 a month for 3 rentals out, same as Netflix, only BBO has no 28 day delay. I already quit Netflix, not because of the delay, but because I just don’t have the time anymore. If I were to sign up again, it’d be with BBO.

There’s a Blockbuster kiosk a couple miles from my home. It has all the new releases, which is nice and I do rent from them because it’s still just $1, like redbox. They also occasionally put out free rental codes that can actually be used to reserve movies through blockbusterexpress.com. There’s no reason their service couldn’t rival redbox, especially with them carrying the new releases. Unfortunately, their kiosks just aren’t as abundant. In my area, there is one Blockbuster kiosk and 11 redboxes. However, I believe once the physical Blockbuster stores fold, the deal will be reworked and BB will have to wait for the new releases like Netflix and redbox have to.

That’s awesome, I didn’t know you could reserve online using a promo code, now I’m going to take full advantage….
The only BBX code I know that is working right now is CALENDAR, most likely for a limited time…but what’s nice is that you can test them online before going to waste your time at the kiosk…

As of April 6, 2010, a redbox kiosk’s marquee indicated the following titles will be available:

“The Blind Side” April 20, 2010

    “Sherlock Holmes” April 27, 2010

    Insiders can wait!

Renting a WB movie like Blind Side using blockbuster express kiosk and a promo code so that it is free – Yes, why not.
Walking into a blockbuster to rent same movie for 4.50 – Hell No!
Also, using Dish on Demand to rent the same movie – also hell no!

Nah. I skip BB. Their exclusive deal smells too ‘corporate bully-ish’ to me. Causes me to NOT want to rent from them.
I can wait for it to reach my price and my convenience before I watch the movie. NF and RB FTW for me still.

Consumers love the price and convenience of netflix and redbox too much to modify their behavior and go back to the store. I think the new advertising from BBI is near worthless. Might even introduce some of their die-hard in-store customers to two brands they didn’t even know about.

For some people you are correct. However, some people want to see/own a movie as soon as it is available on DVD. BB is appealing to that crowd to come back to them.

FTR, many indies are reporting greatly increased numbers on the Warner titles that have the 28 day delay on them. I suspect BB is seeing the same thing and using their ads to hammer the point home.

There is room in this industry for the value minded customer. There always has been. They just have to wait a little longer for their product is all.

Downright balanced of you JS. Yes ‘for some’ cheap matters most and ‘for some’ have it now matters most. I’m saying the ‘for some’ that stick with redbox and netflix will exceed what the studios are expecting. Said another way I believe consumers will alter their behavior so that they can continue to rent from redbox and netflix more so than is generally understood.

I noticed this on the Blockbuster Online site. “Rent it while it’s a new release!” You mean rent it before Redbox and Netflix gets it. What bastards!

    • Visitor [Join Now]
      John Small [visitor]

Why does that make them bastards? It would be like a Blockbuster fan complaining that Redbox advertises that their rentals are only a dollar.

BB would be stupid not to point out the advantages that they have over their main competition. To not do so would be un-American.

Agree but its such a nuanced message to deliver cleanly. Not a game changer by any stretch.

Not yet anyway. When the other 2 studios follow suit then we will see how much patience customers have.

        Firstlawofnature [visitor]

Patience…interesting word. As a consumer I love netflix. I don’t perceive that patience is something that is required of me to be a subscriber. The service is wonderful and it saves me time. I feel like I only come out ahead by using the netflix. Perhaps the same could be said about Redbox for those that use it.

See, I disagree about Netflix but that is because I have a very good indie in my city.

I hate having to wait for a title to show up, never knowing what is going to get shipped next from NetFlix.

I would rather peruse the shelves, chat with the clerks, find out about hidden gems and take home exactly what I want. It is a total experience rather than the passive experince I find Netflix gives you.

If it was a choice between BB and Netflix though, I would likely go with Netflix.

I too have the best of both. Lost of Redboxes about, a Family Video a couple of blocks away, and several Blockbusters within a short distance of any way I’m heading out of the house. I’ve cooled a bit on Blockbuster – they shut the B&M that was less than a block away from my house and a day later I switched to NetFlix from On Demand.

I’ll stick my head into a Blockbuster from time to time. I much prefer Family Video and have for some time, but if I know Redbox has what I want (and I can tell thanks to online inventory and my always-with-me iPhone) they’re my first stop. But when I don’t know what I want, but have a hankering, I go to Family Video and browse.

In 6 years I have recieved only one disc out of order. Netflix has been functioning like an informed store clerk the entire time. The only other thing I will say is that more and more people are behaving like me and fewer and fewer are behaving like you.

I just bought “The Blind Side.” Not because I was unable to rent it from RedBox, but because I knew it was a movie I wanted to own. I will not go back to Blockbuster to rent a movie because they have it 28 days before RedBox mainly due to the high cost to rent from Blockbuster. The 28 days is not incentive enough spend 3-4 times what I will be able to rent from RedBox in less than a month, and is definitely not an incentive to buy a movie I am not sure I want to own. Now if there was a Blockbuster kiosk that was closer, and they had a release and Redbox did not, I would rent…sure.

I will never step foot in a BB again. Ever. If something isn’t available at the ‘Box and I want to see it bad enough(Such as the Steve Austin release “Damage” and “The Blind Side”) i’ll go to Family Video and rent them for $2.59 a night, plus I believe when you rent two new releases mid week you get $2 off your total. Screw BB and their $5 New Release rentals. $5 for a new release rental is absolutely absurd.

This creates a negative pereption of bb for me. I now will wait till Sherlock is released on redbox just as a matter of principle in a show of loyalty. This is how market reacts when a unpopular competitor tries exclusivity deals. To the consumer it feels like this is bb getting back at them. However, offering a discount on the rental or maybe having some exclusive additional footage/bonus content would have the desired effect of having people walk into bb stores.

I’m going to rent it this weekend from BB. I tried Redbox and hate that I have only one day to view unless I want to pay another rental fee (things come up and sometimes one day viewing isn’t a plus). Anyway tried it, and I’m sticking with Netflix (and BB sometimes).

I have been reading all this stuff about USPS Netflix and Blockbuster and I couldn’t care less. It’s all too stressing. I don’t even get excited about streaming cause the quality is too low. If Redbox just stocks alot of Blu-ray @ a fair price then I will be happy on whatever date they stock it. Like normal, if I wanted something to own I will buy it when I feel the price is right.

Blockbuster is DEAD… Mark my words… At my local store, in desperation, they have reinstated LATE FEES after posting signs for MONTHS proclaiming NO MORE LATE FEES. Now they are posting GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SIGNS 70 Percent OFF EVERYTHING GOES… I just rent from REDBOX for 99 Cents…

I guess I’m the only one to see the cruel irony to this. Blockbuster considers anything a year old or less a new release so they can charge more for it. 28 days is nothing compared to their definition of “new release”.

To me it just reminds me of why they are in such trouble in the first place. They don’t see income per customer but instead see income per disc. Those discs pay for themselves quickly. Rent more at a lower price and you’ll have happy customers and a negligible increase in inventory.

HELLO??? doesn’t anyone remember the exclusivity deal that Blockbuster had with the weinstein company? We are exclusive… that was their pull then. however that lasted until the other companies started buying copies and renting them out… so much for that idea. However this deal affects redbox and netflix, but who doesnt’ it affect…. any other rental company. In my home town I have 2 other mom and pop rental chains (plus 2 blockbuster stores untill one of them closes its doors in about a month) not to mention about 3 food city video and another grocery rental store… all of them stock these “exclusive” titles. and with them if I pay $5, I’m getting 2 movies for 2 nights. hrmm there’s a hard decision… 1 blockbuster movie rental, or 2 for the same price.
This is just a desperate CEO who doesn’t understand business trying to save a sinking ship. Blockbuster has been in this position before, you want to save it. STOP focusing on selling anything not a DVD….. focus on RENTING…. you are a rental company, why are you selling books and toys and if what the one poster said earlier is true TV’s…. focus back on renting… lower the price, don’t charge as much for old titles, and get your customers back… otherwise your grave is already dug, the head stone is in place, it’s simply awaiting the final date.
