Taking a page out of the book of its fallen rival, Hollywood Video, Blockbuster has launched a new campaign that guarantees in-store availability of certain titles on the day they are released. The first movie to launch with the guarantee is the hit action film Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Blockbuster guarantees that the new Tom Cruise movie will be available in stores on April 17, its release date, or the rental will be free.

Michael Kelly, president of Blockbuster, said the following about the new guarantee:

“The guaranteed availability also benefits customers across the full slate of Blockbuster services . . . Copies of the film [also] will be available to members of Blockbuster’s Total Access by-mail program as well as Dish’s Blockbuster@Home customers.”

The campaign is at least partly a shot across the bow at Redbox and Netflix, which both face delays on new releases from certain studios.

Will Blockbuster’s new guarantee lure you into using its in-store, online or Blockbuster@Home service, Insiders?

Blockbuster has done this as well for the last 10 years. Off and on of course. Will it help? No, because there are no stores left to visit.

My local independently owned store has always had this guarantee on select titles. With no Blockbuster stores locally available, I could care less what they offer.

Coperate Blockbuster stores have done gauarantee programs in the past which guaranteed select titles for the first several weeks of release but have not had a guaranteed program limited to the first day of release.

    1. Blockbuster has done this before

    2. Where exactly would one go to find one of these….”stores”. Even I living in a suburban heavily populated area don’t have a store within 10 miles of me.

I just think it’s hilarious. They are trying the same tired old act over and over. Enjoy that sinking ship Dish, you made a huge mistake buying it.

    What’s a Blockbuster store?

    Wow….just……wow.

Can I please get a job as a CEO and get paid hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars to make foolhearty decisions like this.

As was said before, Blockbuster has done this numerous times in the past. It never worked before because having a movie in stock ISN’T the issue.
Charging 3 or 4 bucks a rental is the deciding factor of where people rent.

    Lets see… Library (free), Rebox (1.20/night), then Blockbuster at (I believe it’s 2.99/night 4.99 for 5 day).
That’s double the cost of Rebox (for 1 night) and 3x my local library. (which I get for a week)

So please come up with a solution that helps you become competetive again instead of closing stores left and right and buying more copies of movies people are going to rent cheaper elsewhere.

i have two out at a time at Block Buster. Then take them back to the store. And get two more at the store. Take them back and get two more in the mail. It works out to 16 DVDs a month. For $14.50.
      Less then a buck a shot…

Ok for me.. Plus my Netflix online… $8.00 a month. under $24.00 a month.. Got all I need. Fine for me!

In fairness, before our local BB store closed 3 months ago, they had changed their pricing structure to mimic Redbox.

Here in Tampa publix still has one of those BlockBuster express machine and
it only has 3 blu-ray movies inside, what a joke…. and new movies are $2.00
and the preview screen above the machine never works it’s always stuck with an error message.

My Redbox near me has over 40 Blu-ray discs.
with tons of DVD’s and Games.

Its pretty easy to guarantee when you only have 1 store left open! Ok… Maybe they have a couple more stores than that but still…

Back in the day, when blockbuster was in my town, they had the guaranteed thing for popular new releases, so this isn’t new. The thing is, many times it wasn’t in stock, even with the guarantee.

Nearest Blockbuster store is probably about 10-12 miles away, and involve about a 30-45 minute drive on-way (depending on traffic). As long as I mail back my Netflix discs on Saturday, I get new DVDs about 90% of the time mailed to me the following Monday. Why would I patronize Blockbuster?

Yep, they’re guaranteeing the titles that are available at netflix and I assume redbox. Bet they won’t guarantee a title that is being delayed at netflix. Why would they?

Others beat me to it. The proposal would be great — if you could find a store even near your own neighborhood. There used to be TWO Blockbusters within driving distance/public transportation distance of me — one closed 2 years ago and is now a Verizon store; the other closed a month ago. So their guarantee means nothing to me. NOW…if they were to do the same for their online rentals, I might be more impressed since I’m tired of putting something in my queue prior to its’ release, only to find it goes to Long Wait or Very Long Wait the very morning Blockbuster obtains it. (Especially if you know you have a popular movie that many of your customers are clamoring to see).

i already have BB by mail and there is a store within a mile of me so i think this is a great idea for me since it will be free to return a by mail movie to the store and get a new one but not so much for somebody that has to pay like 4 bucks for it.
