Blockbuster wants to help its customers beat the heat this summer with cheap movie rentals and cold drinks.

BB has launched  a   “matinee pricing” promotion that offers select titles at select times for $1.49 the first night.

The promotion runs each weekday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes any catalog title DVD or Blu-ray. Also included with the special pricing, which is 50-cents cheaper that BB’s usual cost for older titles, is a free 20-ounce Coca-Cola product. Rentals are 99 cents per day from the second night on.

Kevin Lewis, chief marketing officer at Blockbuster, said the following about the new promotion:

“When customers want a movie right away on a hot afternoon, there’s no sweating summer at Blockbuster — they can simply walk into a participating Blockbuster store and pick out a low priced movie . . . With these promotions, there’s never a better time to experience the best of what Blockbuster has to offer.”

How does this deal sound to you, Insiders? In my area, at least, there aren’t any more Blockbusters around for me to take advantage of this promotion at. What about in your neck of the woods?

Not many Blockbusters left in my neck of the woods. Given the cost of gas, it would cost more than a first run movie in a theater to get to one of the ones that are still open.

No Blockbusters in my area either. Too bad, because this promo sounds like it could’ve been a nice comeback for them…too late now.

Maybe Redbox should run a similar promo of half price rentals during the day to boost the competition a little.

I still have a Blockbuster very close to me so I might think about this….. But I won’t rent much more because their prices and those at Blockbuster Express are too high.

No they aren’t. 2-3 bucks a rental? Not RB cheap but still cheap enough for movies you don’t have to wait an extra month to see. Too many useless walks by the RB stocked with the same old movies no one wants.
