I agree with Mike. Blockbuster has been in this business for many years before Redbox. Blockbuster has the upper hand when it comes to experience, so if they want to stay ahead of the game start by doing what Redbox does, but just do it better. The infrastructure is already there. Adding features is inexpensive when it comes to building and infrastructure you don’t have yet. The Redbox app isn’t all that great. It doesn’t let you rent via the app. I don’t know why?

They have an app to manage rentals at the Blockbuster store, but they don’t have this ability for their Blockbuster Express machines yet like Redbox does. If they want to stay competitive with Redbox they should allow viewing inventory and reserving movies at their Express machines. This is probably why Blockbuster stock is 76 cents a share.

There is also a new Android app for Redbox called RedBoxer. You can login, find a movie, it will search for the closest kiosks that have that movie in stock based on your locationand with a recent update, you can now reserve it if you’d like. I downloaded to my Droid last night, and it worked perfectly. No more driving from kiosk to kiosk to find the movie you are looking for. Search for Redboxer in the Market. The cost is only 99¢ and worth every penny in my opinion.

The lack of an iPhone app was one if the reasons I switched from Blockbuster to Netflix – the others being streaming, slightly cheaper, and the fact that the brick and mortar Blickbuster at the end of my street was being shut down, so if I was to lose the convenience and piece of mind of dropping my movies off right at the store, why am I not switching over? I’ve only been with Netflix for a little over a month but already I see there availability of titles is better andthey’re faster turning selections out to you (be interesting to see how long this stays consistent but I’ve got friends who have been with Netflix longer who aren’t complaining). Hell, I handed two movies to my mailman one day and recieved notification overnight that Netflix had received them and was sending out two more, which arrived the next day. Works for me.

So here’s a question… How do you convince RedBox to not only have an iPhone ap for all the people with smart phones, but a mobile-web accessible site for people with browser-capable “reasonable intelligent” phones like mine? If can can access my bank account with my phone’s browser, surely I should be able to find what kiosk has the movie I want to rent without having to drive home and long on the PC first?

Long overdue. I had an app that stopped working a long time ago- Dashbuster. There is no official netflix app and some of the apps are not free (like inside rebox pro which is $0.99 :D ) Gimmick? Not at all. If Blockbuster is to ever hope to compete in this climate, they will need to do things like this to make using blockbuster more convenient.
