NCR’s swiftly expanding Blockbuster Express service, which recently added online reservations to its capabilities, has upgraded its website again. Customers can now reserve up to three titles in one transaction and pick them up at the nearest kiosk, an option that is (at least for now) unique to BB Express.

According to Home Media Magazine, the website also “lets customers create favorite lists and rental queues, in addition to identifying a ‘preferred kiosk’, so that whenever they look for DVDs online, they automatically browse movies available at the kiosk most convenient to them.”
Alex Camara, VP and GM of NCR Entertainment, said the following about the upgrade:
“Through our new Web experience, our customers will find a faster and easier way to rent a DVD at the same [$1 per night] price,”
With an eye towards an installed base of 10,000 blue boxes by the end of the year and with features that rival Redbox lacks, such as the ability to use promo codes in online transactions, Blockbuster Express is definitely planning on carving out a major piece of the kiosk business pie for itself.
Insiders, do you see a future where red and blue boxes will appear on every corner, giving consumers greater choice in their home entertainment decisions? How is Redbox going to respond to the first serious challenge to its kiosk supremacy?

When is NCR going to get off the decaf and cut deals with Rite Aid or any number of the convenience store chains in the US to get there installed base up to half of Coinstar’s.
If no one is answering, It probably means nobody has a clue. My guess would be probably never. I wouldn’t expect for them to match up with Coinstar, ever.

I doubt they will ever get up to half of redbox’s #s. Redbox has what, 30,000 kiosks or something? BB has 2,000? They can’t even get to 10% let alone 50% and with redbox putting in more along the way, BB will never catch up. Not to mention they are not putting them in anywhee near their brick stores, so that limits them as well.
tinybrat, I live in a small town and we have a bluebox a mile away from the Blockbuster store. We also have 3 redboxes within a quarter mile of each other. Just wish one of them would come to my side of town :)
Redbox has 30,000 kiosk? This number is wrong.
There was talk at one time of pulling Redbox kiosk out of Wal-Mart and replacing them with BB Express kiosk since Redbox does not have a contract with Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart pulled all of Coinstar’s machines (crain machines, kiddie rides etc…) out about two years ago which is why they had to buy Redbox to stay in business.
This caused Coinstar’s stock to drop big time and they laid off 500 plus employees in thoes days.
Wal-Mart is about Wal-Mart’s best intrest.

That is not true. Walmart does have a contract with redbox, otherwise they wouldn’t be getting paid anything for the boxes to be there, and as for the toy machines, coinstar doesn’t even own those. check your facts jack.
Walmart has agreements with Coinstar (who own Redbox) via profit sharing agreement. Coinstar’s business model is one of partnership with the store locations of the kiosks. You should do your homework before you make that kind of statement. This all public information that you can find on Coinstar’s website.
Now, as far as the Blockbuster thing goes, I would bet against them. BB has been one step behind the media distribution trends for the last 10 years and has become to beraucratic to compete with a small agile company like Coinstar. This happened with Netflix where they tried to play catchup and you will see it happen again with the Kiosk market. BB is now a penny stock and the company is not far from bankruptcy. History will repeat itself once again.
Coinstar does have a contract with many large retailers including Wal-Mart. Also, Coinstar does not manufacture or own any kind of Crane* game or those ride things. Coinstar and it’s affiliates build and own hundreds of different types of ATM’s, Cash Registers & Related Products, and of course: Redbox. I learned this with Google, you should have done the same before you started making things up.
The only thing you got right is that bit about Wal-Mart only caring about itself.

Coinstar did used to have a division that owned those crane and toddler rides, but they sold it off a year or two ago.
BB Express has many free giveaways … many free codes that work per credit card
plus you can rent online with a promo code and know it will be there when you

bb express has moved to the DC area 3 weeks ago. i have gotten 30+ movies from them already and i havent paid a penny. there are so many free codes
that work per credit card. i could have gotten 150 movies if i wanted to but there is nothing left in the box worthwhile renting.
redbox is being stingy with its codes and letting BB express is taking BACK the market that redbox initially took!
it wont be long now before redbox meets its match. all bb express needs to do is get a lot of boxes out there this year.
BTW they get titles from (THE 3) weeks ahead of redbox.

1/4 the titles arent worth renting at all,
1/4 you can get at bb express ahead of redbox for FREE with codes,
1/4 most people have already seen and are in bothe redbox and bb express. and the last 1/4 are movies in redbox not in bb express that imdb has rated

the only BB express in my area is located outside of Sheetz. i have no intentions
on standing outside to rent a movie, rather go to wal-mart anyway. I LOVE REDBOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Redbox has around 25,000 kiosks around the country, and counting. At this point BB express will never catch up to Redbox…even if they do it doesn’t mean anything. I have 3 grocery stores within 5 miles from my home. 2 of them are in the same parking lot (of course 1 of the 2 in the same parking lot would be a Wal-Mart Supercenter). Guess what…none of those stores are closing!!! People will go to the place they feel comfortable with. Even though one store is less then a mile away, my wife would rather drive 5 miles down the road to the one she feels comfortable with. I am sure it is opposite for other people. Plus, having multiple stores around make it easier to find what you need. Just in case the one doesn’t have it. Point being….I hope BB express and RedBox take off. More boxes means more options. People need to stop being so critical of EVERYTHING!!!! Oh and tlochner, there are SO many ways to get promo codes for RedBox machines
Today redbox sent me another march madness free promo code for Monday for a 7-11 store woohoo!
Just be on notice. When you reserve on line with redbox, more than 1 movie . You will be charged separtely. I say this because when my account was overdrawn my bank charged me 4 overdraft fees which cost a bundle. called redbox and was told that when you rent online they charge each rental separetly. I rented at the box and was only charged once for the 4 movies. redbox said thats how they do it. Blockbuster does not do like that. Redbox needs to catch up wit the times.
They just put one of these in a local grocery store a couple of miles from me. They have been sending me free codes and 2 for 1 codes every week but there were none close by till now. I’ll be trying this out tonight.
There are two Redbox kiosks at a store close by but I have had problems there with one machine down or the machines being full so I can’t return movies quite often. I have to rent a movie to return the ones I have.
