Warner Bros. has joined Universal and Fox on the list of studios that have 28-day delay agreements in place with NCR’s Blockbuster Express. Unlike the deals with Fox and Universal, BB Express will not offer select Warner titles at premium prices on the day they are released.

Justin Hotard, VP and GM of NCR Entertainment, offered the following on the deal:

“Blockbuster Express kiosks continue to offer convenience, affordability and the best in entertainment to consumers, letting us make every night a movie night . . . Our DVD-rental kiosks are now in more locations than ever before, and this new agreement with Warner Home Video ensures that we can continue to provide our customers with the DVD titles they want at the price they want.”

One potentially confusing side effect of this deal could be the fact that many consumers are unaware that Blockbuster stores and Blockbuster Express kiosks are not owned by the same company and do not have identical agreements in place with studios. With brick-and-mortar Blockbuster touting its 28-day advantage over Netflix and Redbox on some titles, there is a great deal of room for confusion when the same titles are not in BB Express kiosks on their release dates.

NCR will eventually rebrand the kiosks. The Blockbuster name doesn’t have the goodwill it once did.

As an ex-employee of a B&M BB store, I find it quite ironic to (finally) see some clever commercials touting the 28-day difference between them and their competitors while stuff like this is going on in the background. A perfect example of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing, and a fine paradigm of BB’s overall business model.

I have never seen a Blockbuster Express kiosk in Pittsburgh. I will rent by convenience first and then price. I will not drive 5 more mile to dave a couple of bucks. I do not like the sound quality of streaming.

Keep up the competition. Good for the consumer.

The ncr boxes are mostly in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh and some up north. All of the ones I know of are outside of Sheetz locations. When they first started up, I thought they might be real competition for redbox. I changed my opinion after seing how difficult it was to get new releases from them.
