The "green" movie about blue aliens has earned more green than any other film in history.

James Cameron’s Avatar has knocked the reigning champ off of the top of the box office mountain, and the felled opponent is a film by…James Cameron. Yesterday, Avatar passed 1997’s Titanic to become the highest grossing film of all time worldwide, earning $1.859 billion globally to Titanic‘s $1.843 billion.

Why the big, fat asterisk in the title of this post? Well, once you factor in inflation,  Avatar‘s crown gets a little murkier. Throw in increases in ticket prices over the years and the additional premium commanded by 3D showings, and the REAL all-time box office champ becomes a subject open to debate. The fact remains, however, that Avatar has once again made James Cameron the king of the world—the film is projected to earn about $920 million in profit before Cameron’s share of the earnings.

Insiders, have you seen Avatar? If so, what did you think? Given the film’s earnings, perhaps the better question is: how many times have some of you seen it?

Invalid codes, I’m getting tired of people posting one time use codes. When someone posts a code it should show them TWO choices and state the two types of codes CLEARLY, have two BIG buttons you can push, THEN EXPLAIN IT AGAIN ON ANOTHER “confirm” PAGE so the idiots finally get it. Then let them enter the code and the system puts it in the right place, but if it’s a one time code, DON’T SHOW IT ON THE MAIN PAGE!!

And if you asked, I bet you would find some people here who live close to a box that can test and confirm codes, trusted people who we could rely on for reports on codes.

Actually, one-time use codes often work more than once, as long as it is with a different card and it is done quickly enough after the first use. It seems the Redbox system is a bit slow at updating it as being used sometimes. So, while I do agree they can be annoying when they don’t work, it can be useful and is really not that big of a problem.

Funny, I didn’t see anything about codes… AT ALL… in this posting. Why, exactly, are you spamming it up with your code whining? Piss off…

Bird dude, unlike you, I took the time to check those codes. And two of them required you to go all the way to swiping the card until it tells you it’s invalid. So I paid my dues and can post where I please. What have you done to help out here lately? So you can “piss off”.

And Michael, if it takes 10 minutes or less for the system to update (maybe, I don’t know where you get this idea, should be a instant db update) then why keep them around for days? And people should still MARK THEM so that people know and can take a chance if they want to.

With all the code comments saying “this site sucks” because they tried a posted one time code and it didn’t work, it’s not worth it. I don’t see how they could grab them from here fast enough and run to the nearest box in time for them to work anyway.

It’s been going on way to long. Do some programming.

And you have a army of volunteers here, use them.

I agree that this is not the correct place for this to be posted – the forum is a better place…

In any case, I am sure there are some things that could be done to mitigate things a little bit, but there is simply no foolproof way to handle it due to user error and even deliberate misinformation. The amount of time it takes for the system to update is not clear, but it appears to be more than 10 mins.

Since there is already a way to mark codes as “Expired / One Time Use”, I don’t see much else that can be done on the reporting side. As you alluded to, the real issue is that people don’t bother to click, read, or even look at the color coding. There is little that can be done about that, it is simply the way it is. And, I do not dare try to “guess” if a code is one-time use or not, as that could easily get false positives.

Your idea of using “trusted” volunteers is one I have considered many times, but there is no guarantee that if a code did not work for them that it might work for someone else, or vice versa. The Redbox system can be incredibly inconsistent at times.

I have already created the code system to eliminate invalid codes based on certain criteria, and it works fairly well. It already does far more than similar systems out there found on other sites, including extremely popular general couponing sites.

Perhaps I will do another post regarding the code system and see what everyone thinks and get more feedback and ideas, and go from there.

Thanks to all who visit this site and are interested in making it a better place.

Shouldn’t *attendance* be the basis for comparison?

Avatar has a long way to go!

However the adjusted gross doesn’t take into account all of the ancillary sales of movies today. Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, Digital, Licensed Goods, Cable if all added together for Avatar would increase that number by 25% to 50%. Avatar should finish around the 5th highest grossing domestic movie of all time adjusted for inflation.

And as a side note, Avatar will be seen years from now as the movie that started the 3D movement.

Wow, I feel almost out of place talking about Avatar, with all this code BS at the top there. “It works for me Suckers!” LOL

—>So Avatar, I saw Avatar once in IMAX 3D, and once more in a regular format. The IMAX experience was far better, although they usually kick ass in that department, it was the best IMAX feature I have seen. Most people say that the movie loses its sparkle when viewed in regular format, well kind of – but that is still false. If I had seen it first in non-3D, I would have still loved it. See for me, It wasn’t just about the effects, and the reveloutionary animation, and next generation of 3D, it was the story and the cinematography that pulled me in. A great deal of work went in to all aspects of this film and I am glad to see that this wasn’t your typical action thriller that just focused on blowing things up every ten seconds, or your typical 3D thriller where something lunges toward your face every chance it gets. This was a wonderful experience and I think it is one of the best movies I have seen. When it comes to its earnings, yes inflation and other factors are contributing to its virtual success, but frankly there is nothing wrong with that really. Movies are more expensive so less people go see them because they have lower income and bla bla bla. Basically – when it all pans out, you get about the same amount of success. Lets compare to something else, the likely-hood of someone buying a candy bar in 1970 is about the same as today. Even the price points are radically different, the income/spending ratio works out to be fairly close, its simple really. So I see it as an extremely successful film that will still be raking it in for years to come.

The thing that people continually forget is that Avatar’s figure isn’t adjusted for inflation when compared with previous films. Since movie tickets have tripled in price over the last thirty years, this is a gargantuan oversight. I guess the media likes a good headline even if it’s based on a lie. Here’s the truth, when adjusted for inflation, “Gone with the Wind” is still number one. Avatar is only 26th, and with a looong way to go.
