Hollywood’s video anywhere platform, UltraViolet, was supposed to get consumers excited about buying physical discs again by including a digital copy that is accessible across many devices through Flixster’s app. Instead, things seem to be going so badly for UltraViolet that Flixster owner Warner is giving away iTunes codes to unhappy buyers.

Hundreds of Amazon reviewers are giving scathing commentary to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 because of their poor experiences with the bundled UltraViolet copy of the film. Flixster is addressing the situation by doling out coupon codes to Apple’s iTunes stores that allow unhappy customers to download a digital copy of the final Harry Potter film for free.
You know things are bad for your format when you are sending your dissatisfied users to a competitor to placate them. The consortium behind UltraViolet better have some better cards up its sleeve, or the nascent format could soon become the new Coke of digital media.

What do you think, Insiders? Have you had any difficulty with UltraViolet movies? Is this really the best Hollywood can do to try to drive up DVD and Blu-ray sales?

I keep saying it… just DON’T buy crap that is drm’d. You’ll eventually be disappointed. What will happen to your digital videos when they shut uv down? You still think they’ll work?
Why would a ‘digital copy’ get me excited about buying a disc? The HI-DEF movie on Blu-Ray was what got me excited, I haven’t even used the stupid Ultraviolet code that came with it!
UltraViolet was doomed from the start. This is just the (beginnings of the) realization of that.
The only people who want DRM are the studios. The consumers who buy it either don’t know what it is or don’t have another option.
The more people who get screwed over by DRM, the better. If enough people stop buying this crap, the studios will finally have to give us a better alternative.
I have had nothing but trouble with Flixster. Their streaming is for the birds. The one movie I tried to watch (Harry Potter 8) continually re-buffered, froze several times, and flat out quit playing. I will never use Flixster again. How do I request my own iTunes code to download the movie for free?
Divx anyone?
I don’t buy movies. Period.
I have a suggestion for Flixster. Post their movies on any one of the dozens of sites that already stream movies, including new theater releases, in fine-to-great quality for free. No problems streaming through them!
A digital copy that’s just barely what the minimum that DVD can offer, with DRM up the you-know-what. NOT progressing, folks. Nope.
Also goes to show that streaming and downloading are not ready for prime time, yet. Stick with the beautiful sound and picture that Blu Ray offers and let’s wait until all of this emerging technology matures. A lot.
I was going to do the Ultraviolet routine. I started and boy!!! I have to go to two different sites to sign up for it. I don’t need annoying so I just watch the Bluray and give the regular dvd to my daughter. Actually, I don’t even watch Harry Potter movies. I tried to watch two different ones and they were so very boring after 15 minutes I just turned off the dvd players and watched “The King of Masks”. I only bought the Bluray so I could give my daughter a dvd since she does not have a Bluray player. I know, I know, if I don’t watch Harry Potters movies why didn’t I just buy the regular dvd. Moola me my home K6.
