Hollywood may still be reeling from an unprecedented number of sexual harassment scandals, but it hasn’t relinquished its belief in awarding itself.

The nominees for the 90th Academy Awards were announced today, and they’re a pretty solid and inclusive batch compared to some years past. Let’s dive in a bit, shall we?
A few interesting items to note about this year’s nominations:
- Netflix is really making the Academy notice movies that were primarily streamed instead of shown in traditional theaters. Movies created by the streaming giant garnered eight nominations.
- Get Out is one of the few horror movies ever nominated for best picture. In addition, the main mind behind the film, Jordan Peele, is just the third person to receive best picture, directing, and writing nominations for his or her first film.

Pretty impressive! - Steven Spielberg, whose The Post received several nominations, was snubbed in the best director category. This is a trend for the twice-winning legend, who’s had several relatively recent movies be nominated in many categories without receiving a best director nod.
As always, I’ll be posting my guesses for the winners the week before the Academy Awards air on March 4. In the meantime, check out the full list of nominees here, and leave your thoughts in the comments.
