And the Oscar Nominees Are…

download (1)Get ready for the Oscars! The nominees for the 87th Academy Awards have been announced, and it’s time to list and dish on the nominees for the major categories.

One of the biggest surprises for this year’s nominees was the lack of support for the near-universally lauded Selma, which did earn a Best Picture nod, but was shut out of most other categories. It’s also interesting that the Academy only nominated eight films for best picture, when the category allows for ten.

That pick definitely leaves out a few great films that might have made fantastic winners.

I’ll be posting my picks for the winners before the Academy Awards air on February 22.

    ==2015 OSCAR PREDICTIONS==

    -Motion Picture:

    The Academy will pick: “Boyhood”
    The Best: “Selma”
    Has a comedy won recently? It would be surprising if “Birdman” won.

    =Ranking of nominated titles=

    7 -“American Sniper”
    Too ‘gung-ho’. It will be used for recruiting teens to the military :(

    5 -“Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
    Too quirky for the Academy members–almost all are eligible for social security.

    * 4 -“Boyhood”
    Safe bet.

    6 -“The Grand Budapest Hotel”
    Like “Birdman” comedies RARELY win :(.

    3-“The Imitation Game”
    Like “The Theory of Everything” Too ‘LIMEY’ for the Academy members’ taste.

    1 -“Selma”
    Should win… but is too controversial, as the truth was embellished. Again this is Academy think.

    2 -“The Theory of Everything”
    See “The Imitation Game”.

    8-“Whiplash”
    Saw this movie. It should NOT have even been nominated.

    -Achievement in Directing:

    Alejandro G. Iñárritu – “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” SHOULD win.
    *Richard Linklater – “Boyhood” Will win.
    Bennett Miller – “Foxcatcher”
    Wes Anderson – “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
    Morten Tyldum – “The Imitation Game”
    This is ALWAYS the hardest category to predict. How can Picture and Director category differ or be separate?

    -Best Actor in a Leading Role:

    Steve Carell – “Foxcatcher”
    Bradley Cooper – “American Sniper”
    Benedict Cumberbatch – “The Imitation Game”
    Michael Keaton – “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
    * Eddie Redmayne – “The Theory of Everything” SHOULD Win easily!

    -Best Actress in a Leading Role:

    Marion Cotillard – “Two Days, One Night”
    Felicity Jones – “The Theory of Everything”
    * Julianne Moore – “Still Alice”
    Rosamund Pike – “Gone Girl”
    Reese Witherspoon – “Wild”
    Another hard category. Felicity Jones or Reese Witherspoon might take the award.

    -Best Actor in a Supporting Role:

    Robert Duvall – “The Judge”
    Ethan Hawke – “Boyhood”
    Edward Norton – “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
    Mark Ruffalo – “Foxcatcher”
    * J.K. Simmons – “Whiplash” Easy choice.
    Easiest category to choose. Simmons could have been nominated in the ‘Best Actor’ category.

    Best Actress in a Supporting Role

    * Patricia Arquette – “Boyhood”
    Laura Dern – “Wild”
    Keira Knightley – “The Imitation Game” Should win.
    Emma Stone – “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
    Meryl Streep – “Into the Woods”
    Again, an easy choice. Remember the voters are mostly over 60 years-old.

    Achievement in Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

    “American Sniper”, Written by Jason Hall
    * “The Imitation Game”, Written by Graham Moore
    “Inherent Vice”, Written by Paul Thomas Anderson
    “The Theory of Everything”, Written by Anthony McCarten
    “Whiplash”, Written by Damien Chazelle
    Tough pick. Its all about the subject and narrative. Where is “Selma”?

    Achievement in Writing (Original Screenplay)

    * “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”, Written by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolas Giacobone, Armando Bo
    “Boyhood”, Written by Richard Linklater
    “Foxcatcher”, Written by Dan Futterman and E. Max Frye
    “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, Written by Wes Anderson
    “Nightcrawler”, Written by Dan Gilroy How did this get nomimated?
    This is the one category where a comedy can win.

    Ethan Hawke in Boyhood was great and deserves to be nominated but I don’t think the movie was good enough for a Best Picture win. I haven’t seen all nominees but based on the buzz, my pick would be either Whiplash or The Theory of Everything.
