Redbox is finally gaining some traction in its efforts to circumvent the new release delays forced on it by the Hollywood Three, according to frequent Redbox commenter Eric Wold. The Merriman Curhan Ford analyst recently stated that major new releases such as The Hangover and Inglourious Basterds were available on their street date at the majority of Redbox kiosks.

Both films were stocked at more than 85% of the kiosks in Redbox’s network on their release date, but were mostly checked out by the time the weekend arrived, said Wold.

In spite of this apparent insufficiency of stock, Wold feels that these statstics are an improvement over Redbox’s performance with stocking Hollywood Three new releases compared to previous months. It would also seem to at least partly counter Video Buyers Group insinuations that Redbox is incapable of implementing workarounds on titles that are denied to it.

Wold went on to say the following:

“We know that copy depth on workaround titles is going to be lower than for titles [Redbox gets] through distribution agreements. . . But in my discussions with Coinstar, they stress their workarounds are centered around getting as many copies in as many kiosks by Friday night.”

Insiders, have you noticed an increase in the availability of Fox, Warner and Universal new releases at your local Redbox? Are Wold’s figures a blip or indicative of a new trend?

Wold’s figures are not a blip. They are just plain wrong.

Wold shows little to no understanding of how Redbox works yet he keeps on pumping it. He should be careful of the FCC looking into his reports given his repeated statements that are factually incorrect.

Maybe the FCC has a site like this where you can start posting THE TRUTH as well …LOL After you succeed in your anti-redbox campaign, Wold is next….First redbox then the WOLD!! (cue sinister laugh)

Say what you want but apparently more people are finding these late titles sooner than they did before …and that’s the bottom line for the consumer. I know….I know…the model is flawed and redbox will go bankrupt and people will all recall your prophetic words and wish they listened to you instead of sinking all those dollars into movie rentals for them and their families…..oh the horror of it all! HAHA

I am still wondering what the in stock status will be of (500) Days of Summer, American Pie presents Book of Love and (500) Days of Summer which released today. They are not even listed on the Redbox website?

Oops, I meant to say All About Steve instead of repeating the (500) Days of Summer.

        Hey Mike,

The three movies you mentioned were released today but are not shown on http://www.redbox.com. That means Redbox is NOT going to stock them. The rule is: if it’s not shown on their website on Tuesday, they are NOT going to get it.

Redbox has been that way for as long as I’ve been a customer — and that includes a long period of time before the studios started delaying new releases. I’ve often been surprised at the choices they made but that’s because something that I’m excited about seeing doesn’t necessarily mean Redbox thinks it will be popular with the majority of their customers. For example, you would like to see “All About Steve” (a poorly rated movie) and I would like to see “Robot Chicken Star Wars 2” (a low-popularity, niche move.) I think they stocked Robot Chicken Star Wars 1 – maybe they didn’t have enough customers to make it profitable therefore they didn’t get the sequel.

Redbox has massive amounts of data on rental history vs. ratings so they do their best to weed out the items that aren’t going to give them the biggest bang for the buck.

Maybe Wold should read INSIDE REDBOX, where he can find discussions about how REDBOX is showing that the new releases are checked out at 12:01 A.M. on Tuesday morning, when in actuality, they haven’t even been put in the machine in the first place.

I’d hate to depend on this idiot for investment advice.

I saw an improvement in stocking times for Hangover and Inglourious last week. Typically the delayed titles are stocked mid-morning Thursday in my zip code and this time they were available on Wednesday. Way to go Redbox!

      Here too Turnip

I even was able to get Hangover AGAIN on Saturday night at 8pm at my local 7-11. Schmuck and John Small can bitch and moan all they want but no matter what they will choose to try and tear down next, redbox has shown me more than anything that they take this seriously and when something bad DOES happen that they will eventually fix it. Thats all I ask as a renter. If you want to see bad service try dealing with Best Buy! OMG!

Where I live the local Redbox vendor did not get The Hangover and Inglourious Basterds last Tuesday. This has been happening more often here. Granted I live in a rural area but there are 20 kiosks in a 30 mile area.

I live in NYC. Zip code is 10016. Inglorious Basterds and The Hangover have been fuully stocked in the machines. It is very impressive. I don’t know if the work around will work for every movie but I was very glad to see these two movies every time I get on-line.

…and ultimately thats all I care about. It’s also encouraging to see that they are able to adapt and do what they gotta do…

I would not make those statements after one single week. Inglorious Basterds and The Hangover may have been a little easier to find, but that could just be coincidence. Up until the week before that, the movies put out by the Hollywood three have been increasingly hard to find for me and everyone I’ve talked to. And this week Redbox doesn’t even have 500 Days of Summer or All About Steve at all. I mean come on, getting better? It seems like they’ve been doing worse at getting these titles. If they can only get the BIGGEST box office titles from these studios, and even then get them late and have very few copies..? There’s nothing good about that at all.

Eric Wold is the publicity front for Red box.
Whenever the stocks are dropping or there is negative press about redbox that’s when Eric Wold comes out with a positive spin on things (kind of like this site). You even mis-quoted the release by Mr.Wold he did not say that on release date 85% of kiosk are stocked. He said by the first weekend. Either way that is an out and out fairy tail anyways. He checked 100 machines that’s it. If anything the availability is getting less with the 3 copy limit by walmart and best buy. The only way Red box has 85% of the kiosk stocked is by putting 1 copy in each one which to me does not make it a stocked machine. I like the reaction the industry is taking with this report by Mr. Wold the #’s are so unbelievable that he is ruining his crediability.

Yes, Wold might have a financial interest in Redbox stock doing well. But let’s not ignore that probably you, and definitely many anti-Redbox people on this board, have their own financial benefits in attacking Redbox. So don’t try to portray one side as the unvarnished truth and the other as biased. Both sides tend to cherry-pick the figures that fit their agenda, and say little about the figures that don’t.

If Redbox has limited copy availability, it’s actually in their best interests to spread those copies around to many kiosks rather than stocking a few with great depth. If you have a shortage then any DVD which sits in a kiosk overnight is a wasted revenue-making opportunity, you want them all rented all the time rather than keeping them in reserve. Noone except Redbox itself can tell for sure how many copies of a title are in a given machine.

I will have some further thoughts on this subject I hope I can get time to post tonight, Christmas preparations can’t wait though.

“The Hangover” and “Inglorious Basterds” were both in my local RB machines early on Fri. morning the 18th. Personally I think RB is getting better at getting the “Workaround” titles to the kiosks more quickly.

Putting out untruths in the press like Eric Wold makes it seem like Redbox is really struggling. I think he should of at least tried using numbers that are believeable.

I was looking for The Hangover @ Walmart here in Iowa and the store rep said Redbox bougth 300 copies from them and they were sold out. I didn’t care though since I buy Blu-ray not DVD. He said that a sale is a sale and he didn’t think there were any loss-leader issues since they seem to price fairly high anyways.

In Montgomery, AL area, Red Box service is excellent. If Red Box intends to put a movie in the machine, it is usually in there on the release date. I normally do online rentals with it and have no trouble finding the new movies. I wish they would reconsider the “All About Steve” decision though. I would like to see that one.

All I have to do is step inside a Blockbuster storefront, stand in line, and pay too much for a dvd (and associated ‘late’ fees) and I immediately realize why I continue to enjoy the convenience, economics, and no hassle of Red Box.

Does the service need impromement? Who’s doesn’t? If a company continues to fail to meet customer expectation’s they go out of business, except if they’re “Too Big To Fail”. So relax and enjoy the FACT thay we have option’s.

I just have a question. When I rent a dvd I pay 6 or 7 cent tax and so does everybody else. I want to know if this is legal and why are they charging tax on something we return, we don’t keep the dvd? Why are we paying tax on something that’s already been taxed when it was purchased?

    • Visitor [Join Now]
      Joe Schmuck [visitor]

Because when the dvd’s are purchased with the intent to rent, they are bought tax exempt. State Laws require that sales tax be charged on rented items.

I LOVE REDOX AND ALL, BUT IF THEY DON’T START TO HAVE THE NEW RELEASE’S I WANT, I’M SERIOUSLY ABOUT TO GO BACK TO NETFLIX, I RENT MOVIES EVERY WEEK, WHY DO I NEED TO DEPEND ON REDBOX TO “HOPEFULLY” HAVE THEM WHEN I CAN KNOWINGLY GET THEM FOR SURE, ESPECIALLY THE FREE TRIALS AT NET FLIX, PLUS I CAN RENT SEASONS OF TV SHOWS, THAT’S NOT BAD:)

I think there are alot of crybaby posts regarding this. As stated above, WE have choices. You don’t have to rent only from REDBOX. If REDBOX doesn’t have what you want, get it from NETFLIX, or BLOCKBUSTER. And keep in mind, what you all are compleaining about is a service that that charges ONE dollar to see a movie!! If you have to wait a few days, after a release date to see it, BIG DEAL!!!! Have you examined your cable bill lately? That renders complaints! Not this!
