Analyst: Netflix is Growing Like a Weed

imagesWant even more evidence that Netflix continues to put more and more fear into the hearts of entertainment executives who dismissed it just a few short years ago?

BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield is here to lay it down.

Far beyond just producing and adding content to make it competitive with premium cable channels, Netflix also seems to be going after mainstream basic cable audiences as well.

Says Greenfield:

“Netflix is not just trying to replace and be HBO. Netflix is adding content that would be on Discovery. One of their most popular shows last quarter was a documentary called ‘Chef’s Table . . . “Netflix is growing like a weed.”

Greenfield also believes that Netflix’s lack of advertising is contributing to its growing popularity:

“Advertising overall is growing. TV advertising [is] declining . . . I think more and more people are watching content not using advertising. So you look at why Netflix has exploded … I think the lack of advertising is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for traditional media because eyeballs are shifting.”

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, what is the primary reason? Great content? No ads? Something else?

Yes, no ads, binge watching. Streaming is much cheaper than cable and DVR

Yes! Yes! Yes! No ads… I love my NetFlix… Streaming.. And three out in the mail. My streaming is locked in at $7.99 a month Until June of next year.
If it goes up a few bucks. Fine. You can’t beat it. And if I have to pay a few bucks more for in the mail. Fine.
I’m paying $55.00 a month for. NetFlix three out at a time in the mail. NetFlix streaming. Hulu & Show Time. Warner Archives streaming. And Acorn Streaming. With the UK shows. I have that all $55.00 a month. Cable Cant touch it…
    And Over the air TV… 69 Channels…
Cable TV can take a hike…

No ads is a major draw. Netflix gets that it is ALL ABOUT CONTENT. They have the largest streaming library available and their homegrown content is incredible! They understand how important it is to let the artist control their own projects and that is the only way they ended up with such a fantastic series as Orange is the New Black. They green-lighted that show with no pilot episode requirement and that hands-off policy is key. Hollywood can’t expect us to keep swallowing mega-trash and cable can’t keep expecting us to pay exorbitant prices to subsidize sports channels. Television is actually more of a draw for actors now that H’wood only casts superheroes/villains for those great one-note performances. Still not one of them can touch Netflix. Netflix is the future!

I still want on demand payments without subscriptions since I don’t watch much!
