An emerging frontier for online content distribution seems to be the world’s dominant social network, if recent developments continue. Just days after the launch of Facebook rentals by Warner, Netflix is rumored to be in talks with the social network on a new partnership.

According to Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves, Netflix and Facebook are in the midst of a push towards improved integration of their services. Says Hargreaves:

We believe that, on top of its existing momentum, [Netflix] is working with Facebook to launch deeper integration of Netflix into the Facebook platform. The first stages of these efforts are likely to launch within the next few months, and we believe they could drive incremental subscriber growth domestically while helping to accelerate Netflix’s international expansion.

Where could this potential (emphasis on “potential” at this point) partnership lead?

Netflix and Facebook already have their respective apps on portable devices, etc. What would the drawing point for consumers be should the two companies offer an integrated service?

This is a joke and will never happen. This analyst just wanted to grab a headline. Facebook has no need for Netflix. They either deal direct with the studios or launch their own service. There are no barriers into entry in the streaming world.

‘There are no barriers into entry in the streaming world.’

Sure there’s none if you are professor Foolhardy at Lulu university. Meanwhile back in the real world some companies, like netflix, are tremendously successful by focusing on doing something quite narrow very very well.

The concept that facebook can enter all sorts of different businesses, like video distribution, just because folks spend a lot of time on the web site today is just plain silly. If they don’t stick to their core business they may find themselves looking like yahoo one day.

By the way if there are no barriers why is netflix so damn successful?

no its not its brilliant and it will happen because there obviously is a reason you cant understand and that is pathetic on the lowest rate and if you cant realize that you HAVE to be dumb as heck!

If people are already on the computer why not just go to the Netflix website and watch the movie. What need would there be for an extra step to have to watch it on facebook with extra ads all over. Dumb!!

Yeah, I can’t see anything for Netflix in such a deal… they’ve already got a huge subscriber base so why partner with a social site. Facebook might seriously benefit although it does seem dumb to go to their site if you can watch the same stuff on the Netflix site. This is a little OT, but what’s the draw of the social sites anyway? I’m on Facebook and MySpace and I wouldn’t really miss either if they were to suddenly vanish.
