With most Redbox kiosks now stocking Blu-rays, the HD discs will account for a quarter of the company’s revenue by the end of next year, predicts one analyst.

Besides generating 25% of Redbox’s 2011 revenue, Michael Pachter with Wedbush Morgan also believes that Blu-ray will reach a household penetration of 30% by the end of next year.

Pachter also expects Redbox to easily reach its recent estimate that 5-10% of its disc rentals in 2010 will be Blu-ray. Said Pachter:

“We believe Redbox will see some comp and earnings growth … in the back half of 2010, especially as it sees higher gross profit dollars from the higher priced dollars paid for Blu-ray and video game rentals,”

Do these numbers sound right, Insiders? Do you find yourself renting more HD discs from your local Redbox now that they are more widely available?

Based on the alternatives which is a higher priced option for BR at Blockbuster, or the hit and miss of BR from Netflix, they probably are right.

YES .. redbox is where i get my b-rays …
easiest way to get a blu-ray for $0
you open new redbox account .. any new email will do.
you use a new credit card.
rent a stnd dvd online get credit.
then when you go to rent blu-ray next … you use credit and it is free.
1 reg dvd and 1 blu-ray for $1.06 MD tax.
go pick up with credit card.

    btw,
blank verbatim bd25 are only $1.8 in q=10 at bhphoto.
when blank disks cost more than the rental cost you know rentals are cheap.

netflix would be a better solution but, new releases are slow in coming there.
at redbox blu-rays are available. no one who wants them has problems getting them.

      Math says:
10 Blu-ray 25’s for $1.80 = 18 cents a disc. Also the blank discs you buy are made to be burnt in burners unlike the official movie disks you buy/rent from somewhere. Movie ones are pressed and sealed @ the manufacturer/distributor place. Same thing with DVD’s and CD’s. But hey, I got what your sayin, a good deal is a good deal.

Think how much money Redbox could be making if they raised the regular rental price to $1.50 and their Blu-Ray price to $2.00.

This company is leaving a ton of money on the table.

So you don’t think demand would be dented at all if they raised prices to what you suggest?

As a partial owner of the business I think they have it just right. The market share gains and goodwill generated by the $1 pricing have been huge. They can optimize prices down the road if the market will bear it. Long-term greedy is the smarter option when building a business.

Oh give it up already you broken vinyl record. Your very existence truly is ‘small’.

I’ll bet you’ve said the same thing over 1,000 times on this web site. Change your name to “Pete & Repeat” already…

They should make deal with blu-ray player sellers to give 10-15 Redbox one-time use codes when they buy the players.

I have only been renting Blu-rays now since they came out. I still don’t understand why on codes they say for DVD only when really it’s just $1.00 off that you can use on Blu. I rent alot of Blu-rays for 50 cents and they look so much better. I used to love DVD when it was new back in 97, but it’s had it’s time and it no longer offers acceptable pq 4 me. Now if only they’d drop DRM, pre-show forced ads and people putting their fingers on the playing side of the disc!
