As many of you may remember, just over a week ago I mentioned I would be updating you on how Inside Redbox will help keep Free Movie Monday’s alive. My goal was to get that update to you this week, but it didn’t happen. I have most of the details worked out, but need a little more time in getting everything in place.

I do have a good reason I didn’t get everything ready as planned, though, and here it is…

On Saturday, May 23 we celebrated the birth of the newest member of our family – baby Leah. She came just over 3 weeks earlier than expected, though, and shortly after her birth we learned she was suffering from respiratory distress. After trying for a little while to control it, it was deemed she needed more treatment than our hospital could provide, and was Life Flighted to another hospital with a NICU (Newborn ICU).

All went well there and we were able to break her out a few days ago, and she is now doing well at home. Of course, we have had follow-up doctor visits and trips to the hospital for lab tests, taking even more of my time away from working on my usual activities – including this site.

Anyway, I just thought I would share with you a bit what was going on so you know I didn’t abandon you! June 8 is the next date Redbox will NOT have a Monday promo code for us, so I plan to have everything ready by then.

UPDATE: I have had a few people who understand how expensive having a child life flighted and in the NICU is ask how they could help. I appreciate it very much!

How can you afford to have a baby in this economy ?

Money is important and family is second.

Wow, you must be one sad individual to say something like that. You can try to make money your only love in this world but it won’t ever make you truly happy.

This is surely going to ruffle some feathers….jakoblin, were you not breastfed as an infant? I am sorry for you and your cynical mind.

WOW…WOW!!! You are a very disturbed individual. Just remember what you put out gomes back ten fold. You are in for some bad returns!!!

Jesus, people really have their priorities messed up.

I agree completely. As a guy working as a PC tech that can’t even afford a proper apartment’s rent, let alone ANYTHING good in life (I ditched Netflix for Redbox for crying out loud), it’s ridiculously obvious to me that money is MUCH more important than family. It’s unhealthy and detrimental to your long term well-being to get involved in a relationship and “family stuff” when you can’t even afford it… yes, money first, family second.

That’s not directed at the author of the site, of course, but at the other comments to this reply. As for the author of the site: seriously, advertising for Netflix on a Redbox site? My head just imploded :P

I can only hope you just said this for shock affect and attention. What a sad, sad statement. I hope you learn the truth.

“If you want to help, the best thing you can do is signup with one or more of our sponsors. If you haven’t done it already, signing up for a free 14-day trial with Netflix helps us out the most.”

Adsense and pay-per-click aren’t going to magically pay the bills, so no need to sweet talk people into clicking your links with personal and emotional persuasion. This goes against what Social Spark calls “100% Audit-able In-Post Disclosure” in their code of ethics.

“By receiving payment for blogging about a certain topic, even if you would have written about that topic anyway, you run the risk of giving the impression of a conflict of interest. By showing your audience, in a very visible and proactive manner, that you are being paid for that content, you will maintain the trust of your readers and avoid any appearance of impropriety.”

I think it’s something all blogger should do. If you’re getting paid a commission for every Netflix trial taken, then out and say it. You ran a similar situation back during Christmas Countdown ‘07 with your 112 new Netflix subscriptions. You make about $9 per new Netflix trial, so that was about $1008.

And remember, if you offer considerations or incentives for people to sign up, you need written permission. It’s in the Affiliate Network Agreement.

I don’t know how anyone could read

“If you haven’t done it already, signing up for a free 14-day trial with Netflix helps us out the most.”

and not realize that he gets a commission. Sure looks like “100% Audit-able In-Post Disclosure” to me.

As far as I can see, mc.incid, Michael has complied with that “code of ethics” and your implications that he isn’t seem to be based on your own agenda.

I don’t know if this website is affiliated with SocialSpark, if it isn’t then Michael is not bound by their code anyway. It’s important to note SocialSpark is itself a marketing company which has set up the “code of ethics” not for completely altruistic reasons, but as a way to help themselves make more money.

Yes mc.incid, we all know that commission is paid out. Guess you just wish it was you that started up the site and were collecting the dollars. Well, everyone works for the money, and that goes for commissions.

Congratulations on your new baby girl. It must have been one of the proudest and happiest moments of your life. I’m glad to hear she’s through the danger.

I am touched by what some have said on here and shocked by others. How someone could criticize you for having a kid, and suggesting that money is somehow more important than family. I just have no words to adequately express how I feel about that, except to say that life for someone like that would be unbearable for me. If I had to think like that, I’d almost rather die. I hope you don’t let them get you down.

May God continue to bless you and your family. Nothing is more important than family.

Congratulations and glad all is now well.

I remember waiting to find out the APGAR score to see how things looked, dreading problems which seemed out of our control. Luckily I never had a bad time of it, sounds like you did but just for a few days. Hope having been through birth three times before made it just a little easier to relax.

Congrats to you and your family. Sounds like coming early was a blessing. I’m very glad to hear your little Leah is doing well. Scary. Hope Mom is taking care of herself, as much as possible. We all love the free codes, but it’s not a biggie waiting. Family should always come first and we all know that. Enjoy your beautiful family. A house full of love and laughter, wonderful! Wishing all of you joy, health and happiness!

jakoblin must not be a family state of life. Yes, we need money to pay for our family life, but without the family I couldn’t see much enjoyment in making money and no one to share it with. If parents can manage a larger famliy, time wise, that’s what’s truely important, not money. Many would be better people if they were raised without all of the bells and whistles, more famliy time together. More interesting, why does jakobin feel you don’t have enough money or can’t afford kids?
Just remove jakobin from your email list, :o) . I know free speech is good, but dumb/mean is not nice.
Or slimply jakobin made the comment for attention….good job jakobin! And so smart not to use your real name.

Congratulations to you. I am glad everything turned out well for you and your family. My daughter also was born 3 weeks early but fortunately she did not have any major issues. I know that can be a hard and stressful time for everyone involved and it is great you were able to be there with your family when they needed you the most. May God continue to bless you and your family.

i thought this website supposed to be for the matters of Redbox, no? but how come the blogger tried so hard to pull redbox customer into netflix. i just dont get it. enlight me

    • Visitor [Join Now]
      Mark [visitor]

There is a great deal of overlap between Netflix and Redbox customers. There are a lot of people who are movie fans and take advantage of all the convenient ways to get them, and want to talk a little about Netflix and Blockbuster too.

And face it, Netflix dwarfs Redbox even after the recent Redbox expansion. A back-of-the-envelope calculation says that Netflix has more monthly customers (10 million) than the total number of DVDs Redbox rents each month.

Well congratulations to you! As a nurse in a NICU here in Northern CA, i know that it can be incredibly stressful and fearful…. but I’m happy to know that your little addition is doing great.

Best wishes to you…. you have a lovely fam!

Children are second greatest blessing. For those of you who are grandparents, you know that grandchildren are the greatest blessing. So I am so very happy for your parents and your wife’s parents. Although, a new child in the family is a true delight.

May all of your children, live long and prosper and provide you and your wife with at least a few of life’s greatest blessings.
