We just talked about how big 4K Ultra HDTV is getting a few days back. Further evidence to support the format’s snowballing growth has come in from research firm IHS, which reports that shipments of 4KTV panels in April passed 3 million units for the first time.

The Ultra HD format now represents 14 percent of all TVs shipped globally, and is forecast to make up 20 percent of all TV shipments by next year.
Linda Lin, senior analyst with IHS, chalks up the format’s growth to increasing consumer awareness and price cuts from manufacturers.

Two display makers in particular, both from the same country, have begun to dominate the Ultra HDTV market. Says Lin:
“South Korean panel makers are now leading the 4KTV panel market . . . In fact, LG Display and Samsung Display have risen to become the largest global manufacturers of 4K displays.”
At what price point would you spring for an Ultra HDTV, Insiders?

Pass! Not going to get one at this time. No need….
And the price still needs to come way down for the main stream people to get one. And still not all that much out….
Maybe in 3-5 years? Now. No thanks..
I will get one when a) there is the same anout of 4k material out there as there are Blu-ray Discs. And b) when the price is equivilent to HD TVs today. Then I MAY think about it
All decisions are based on economics, and the lower prices is the reason for increase in sales along with natural cycle whereby those who purchased their fist flat screens a decade ago are looking to replace them as they start to go, as was the case with me. Those who purchased their first flat screens paid several thousand, so they are conditioned to the price level of today’s 4K TV’s, and this too is reason for sales numbers as I see it.
As an early adopter, there have been some teething pains, but once you go Ultra its hard to go back.
Not only do I use the monitor for entertainment, but also for IT work as well. I can’t see anyone not making the move when the time is right–replacing or adding new equipment.
I just got a HDTV recently to replace my January 1996 19.5″ Sharp CRT TV!
OLED or bust.
