Report: Slow Growth for 3D HDTV

3D TV is not getting off to nearly as strong a start as its proponents would have hoped for, according to a new report from research firm DisplaySearch. The firm predicts that only 3% of all HDTVs shipped in 2010 will be 3D-compatible.

Gaming Insiders, take note. Since last August, Redbox has been running a few video game rental trials in select markets. According to a report on video game site Joystiq, the company is poised to bring video game rentals to “thousands” of its kiosks around the country. As in the test markets, video game rentals will cost $2 per night.

Fresh off of a contract extension and six-figure retention bonus, bankrupt Blockbuster’s CEO Jim Keys may be on his way out. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that BB has hired an executive search firm to replace Keyes and possibly other company executives. BB’s largest creditors, including billionaire Carl Icahn, must sign off on the new Blockbuster CEO by the end of the year, according to the restructuring deal made before BB entered bankruptcy.

One of the major shortcomings of 3D in the home may be on its way out if electronics manufacturer Toshiba has anything to say about it. At the Ceatec trade show in Japan this week, Toshiba unveiled a glasses-less 3D TV. The new technology takes a standard two-dimensional image and creates nine different versions of it from slightly different directions, creating a 3D effect without the usual cumbersome glasses.

Redbox’s appeal to teenagers is at its highest level ever, according to Piper Jaffray’s most recent survey of the young demographic. As reported by news and analysis service Benzinga, Piper’s national study of 6,000 teenagers on their current and future movie rental activities revealed that kiosk use is on the rise as retail store use continues to plummet.

The $1 per night DVD rental popularized by Redbox and imitated by others has been called many things by many people. Brilliant, unsustainable, consumer-friendly and devaluing have all been used to describe it.

Redbox has tested higher pricing in limited markets, but the buck-a-night price point has generally stayed put over the years. Now NCR-owned Redbox rival Blockbuster Express plans to roll out “premium” pricing by way of a new deal with Universal.
