Looks like certain movie studios might be wrong – Redbox is not really killing their profits!
A recent research study by the NPD Group and Adams Media Research – as well as internal numbers from Redbox – show that Redbox users are just as likely to buy DVD movies as anyone.

It also notes that 23 million of the projected 77 million DVD sales by Redbox customers this year will come after the customer rented the movie from Redbox first.

So, it looks like that $1 for Redbox is turning into profits of over $391 million for the movie studios. Not bad for a company that some studios are trying to kill.
Anything else you want to whine about now, Universal?

As mentioned in an earlier post, Universal filed a motion for dismissal of the lawsuit that Redbox brought against it in October of last year. In a recent amendment to that motion, Universal resorted to name-calling, calling Redbox a “jilted distributor”.

On March 5, Redbox filed their response to the motion, in part saying:
“Making unwarranted attacks on opposing counsel or stating snappy one-liners is not a substitute for legal reasoning. Such tactics do not allow Universal to avoid the effect of [Redbox’s] well-pled allegations. Universal’s motion to dismiss must be denied. No amount of name calling by Universal can, or should, change that result.

Earlier in the day reports started surfacing that Blockbuster was hiring an outside firm to discuss the possibility of a bankruptcy filing. Their stock fell over 75% before the markets closed, as many investors sold on fears over the filing.
CNN Money is now reporting that Blockbuster has hired Kirkland & Ellis “for assistance with our ongoing finance and capital-raising initiave”, according to Blockbuster spokeswoman Karen Raskopf.
So, it looks like they are not filing for bankruptcy, but the question remains: is Blockbuster in such a precarious situation that even a small hint at bankruptcy causes mass panic?
Blockbuster’s relevance in this marketplace keeps shrinking. Your move, Blockbuster.
